We took a last minute decision to go to Birds of Eden one afternoon, we had an hour or so to spare. Very glad we did. The birds are beautiful and so interesting to see up close.

This is said to be the largest bird aviary in the world covering an area of 3.2 hectares and Birds of Eden provides fun for all the family, especially if you purchase the cheap R20 booklet which features all the different species that live there. Spotting the different birds in the most amazing surroundings and ticking them off in the book kept us amused (and educated) for several hours. There is a small restaurant but the birds are the real stars and if you can spot just a quarter of those in the book, you really deserve a pat on the back. It is truly worth a visit.

For anyone who loves forests and / or birds, this is a MUST. The sheer variety of the birds is gobsmacking, and they all look in such excellent shape. This is exactly what a zoo or bird sanctuary should be like. They literally netted a huge part of the natural rainforest and allow the birds total freedom inside. Breathtaking. We recommend buying the information booklet for about R20 and ticking off the birds as you see them.

We were on the last week of a month long trip to Botswana and South Africa and had been on safari for 3 weeks, seeing a multitude of birds in the wild. However, we totally LOVED Birds of Eden. The aviary is HUGE and the birds are clearly happy and active. We arrived in the morning and spent 3 hours walking around. We then went and hiked at Robberg Peninsula but with time remaining in the day, we came back and walked through the aviary again - it was that good. Loads of photo opps and the more you look, the more you see. Highly recommend!!
