Owner description: Birds of Eden is part of the South African Animal Sanctuary Alliance (SAASA). Birds of Eden is the largest single-dome free flight aviary in the world, spanning 2.3 hectares of natural forests, streams and dams. With over a kilometre of walkways, visitors can experience the thrill of spotting almost 3500 previously captive birds of over 200 different species flying free and living natural lives. The scenery alone warrants a visit with hundreds of different plant and tree species plus there are giant fruit bats, golden-handed tamarins and the smallest of the antelopes, Blue duikers. Visits to Birds of Eden are self-guided and you are free to wander for as long as you wish at your own pace. Guided tours for group bookings can also be arranged on request at no additional cost.

For anyone who loves forests and / or birds, this is a MUST. The sheer variety of the birds is gobsmacking, and they all look in such excellent shape. This is exactly what a zoo or bird sanctuary should be like. They literally netted a huge part of the natural rainforest and allow the birds total freedom inside. Breathtaking. We recommend buying the information booklet for about R20 and ticking off the birds as you see them.

We were on the last week of a month long trip to Botswana and South Africa and had been on safari for 3 weeks, seeing a multitude of birds in the wild. However, we totally LOVED Birds of Eden. The aviary is HUGE and the birds are clearly happy and active. We arrived in the morning and spent 3 hours walking around. We then went and hiked at Robberg Peninsula but with time remaining in the day, we came back and walked through the aviary again - it was that good. Loads of photo opps and the more you look, the more you see. Highly recommend!!

An excellent experience with many beautiful birds, many of whom are happy to interact directly and are a lot of fun. The forest habitat provided is beautiful and in most of the aviary you are unaware of the netting.

A visit to Birds of Eden is a must when in the area . A self guided tour to see the most beautful birds in a paradise like environment.
Could have stayed longer than the almost two hours we spent there .
