If you love birding, this could be the place for you! Nice rooms, but nothing fancy. A few updates would be nice. Ceiling fan, but no A.C. outstanding food served on a deck overlooking fruit feeders. Very nice service and owner was very congenial.Large enclosed tennis courts and beautiful pool. Hot tub was cool. You can be greeted by a common paraque as you walk to breakfast. Honeycreepers abound. Many beautiful species waiting to be observed.

As described in previous reviews this hotel has a great location for seeing birds, set in extensive grounds. But the previous proprietress seems to have left, and the remaining owner has let the place badly go: you would not go near the filthy pool, worn out hammocks are threadbare, the food is tinned, the staff’s attention is cursory, etc. The shabbiness does not justify the price and he seems to be just milking the previous glories. But the bedrooms were OK, beds comfortable, bathrooms functional, and the grounds unspoilt

Stayed as part of a small group tour for 3 nights. Rooms extremely basic but very clean. In separate need of renovation, there is no hot water tap in the hand basin and no plug. The basin was not secured to the wall, the towel rail was made from plumbing pipe and 90 degree fixings. There was no hot water for the shower on 2 nights of our 3 night stay and there were cracks in two of the panes of glass in windows and the one of the mesh nettings over the open window had a big hole in it and 3 of the 5 lightbulbs in the main light were not working, this was rectified quickly. Food was plentiful, freshly cooked and very good for all meals. Kitchen staff all very friendly. We had read reviews before coming so knew what to expect. Would definitely come again even with the problems with the room. The grounds are wonderful and the high up open air restaurant with its rustic atmosphere a wonderful area in which to watch the birds; just make sure you are wearing sturdy non slip shoes because the path can be very slippy walking back down the slope.

While only a few minutes' drive from the large city of San Isidro de El General, Talari Mountain Lodge is peaceful, comfortable and blessed with a variety of habitats that encourage birds and other wildlife. There is a viewing platform overlooking the river and, to the east, the highest point in the country, Cerro Chirripo, can be seen in the distance. The staff and the owner, Don Carlos, were welcoming and knowledgeable about the birds to be found here. They added fruit to the feeder near the restaurant when I asked, and that set up some great photo opportunities the next morning. I would strongly suggest that adding a few hummingbird feeders nearby would create even more attractions for visiting birders like me.

This hotel has good birding along the river, but that's about all it has. The jacuzzi wasn't operating. The rooms were tacky rustic, not quality rustic. Felt a little claustrophobic. The meals tasted good, what there were of them. For dinner, there was a delicious carrot soup served in the smallest little bowl I've ever seen. Decent portion of grilled chicken, and the potato was good, although it could have benefitted from a larger dollop of butter or margarine. But then, the refried beans, salsa, and chocolate pudding were served in what I can only describe as large thimbles. Portions at breakfast again varied in size. I asked for mantequilla (which can be butter or margarine) for the toast, and after checking in the kitchen, the waitress told me they didn't have any. (A restaurant with no butter or margarine?) And the box lunch we left there with consisted of two sandwiches, one with a paper-thin slice of ham in it, the other with an equally thin slice of cheese. Needless to say, both were dry and tasteless. I really wouldn't stay there again.
