Recommended length of visit: 2-3 hours
Owner description: The Lost Valley offers a unique window into the cultural heritage of the west of Ireland. Indeed it is itself arguably the finest memorial of the Great Irish Famine that remains today. As The Lost Valley is an active working farm, visitors can experience life on the farm with pet lamb feeding for younger adventurers, a working sheep dog demonstration and a sheep shearing demonstration in season on request. Meeting point/Reception is located at the lost valley - Silver Strand, Louisburgh, Co. Mayo, Ireland.

Visited the lost valley today with our teenage and adult children. We were in a small group with two other families. Gerard gave the guided tour but Maureen was there to meet us at the start and joined us along the way. Gerard gave an enthralling tour. The man is a walking encyclopedia on the subject of the famine in his home area. He engaged with all the people on the tour and explained what happened in Uggool from a social and political point of view. His passion for the subject was clear. The Lost Valley is a particularly scenic area and could be enjoyed even without any commentary but Gerard's tour gives an understanding of the place and the history that one could not even guess looking at the beauty of the countryside. Also... Maureen's cup of tea is the best!!!!

This was the best tour I've ever been on. From the moment we arrived Ger and Maureen made us feel so welcome and the views of the silver strand and Mweelrea were jaw dropping. The tour is about the famine times and the hardship the local people endured during this time. The passion and knowledge that Ger spoke with was really impressive and you couldn't but be affected by the stories he told. The views of Killary Harbour are superb. This is a tour you must go on and I cannot recommend it highly enough

Brilliant day out. Great insight into the impact of the famine on the local population. Stunning views which we wouldn't have had the opportunity to see if we weren't on the tour. Gerard is an extremely knowledgeable and entertaining guide. Maureen was wonderfully welcoming. Tea & scones were a lovely finish to the tour. Highly recommend it.

I visited the Lost Valley two weeks ago - despite some heavy rain on the morning, and grey skies and drizzle for the rest of the afternoon, the beauty of the area was not diminished. The history of the place was equally captivating and moving. Ger's passion for shining a light on the lives of all those who lived here and left here is evident but he is also a brilliant conversationalist with expertise on many aspects of the culture, history and ecology of this place. This was the highlight of our week long trip to the west, and I plan to be back, for the tour, the beach, and the banter!

This location is a must for anyone interested in Irish history, beautiful scenery and the open air. We were taken there by my wife's cousin and his wife but the arrangement was set up by his daughter, they had all visited the location previously and knew that we would appreciate it. It was truly an unforgettable experience. The ramble is hosted by Gerard Bourke, who owns the land, which is a working farm. His knowledge of the history of this special location is remarkable and the 3.5 hours taken to complete the walk seems to pass without notice. The weather on our visit could have been better with low cloud and mist but this did not detract from the beautiful scenery, despite the sadness of the history. We will definitely visit again and hopefully with better weather.
Please remember it is essential to book in advance.
