A bit aged but still a lot to offer

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 6 Jul 2024
After our premiere last year, this was the second time we visited the Saimaa region and stayed at the Holiday Club Saimaan Rauha. Our overall, aggregate impression and experience is positive but there are admittedly a few things that could be improved.

Let`s start with the rooms. Ours has been quite spacious but the general look and feels is definitely a bit dated and could certainly benefit from an update. That said, there`s everything you need.

Next, the food. Here, the Holiday Club Saimaan Rauha offers several choices. First, there are two separate in-house restaurants/bars with the New-England-style sports bar O'Learys and the Classic Pizza Restaurant. Apart from these, there's a dinner buffet that offers various salads, mains and deserts. Overall, these are good, but the general variety could be a bit better, as the offer appears to repeat itself after 3-4 days. While there are some really nice dishes (e.g. the mango salad, ground beef pasta or skewers), others are more on the average side. One recommendation would be to offer (even) more Finnish or regional choices as well as some soups. Also, offering the dinner buffet as a booking option might make sense (at least I was'nt able to see it in the order process). Besides the dinner buffet, there's also a breakfast buffet, which - especially in comparison to the dinner buffet - is definitely a great offer both in terms of quality and variety.

Another plus is the service and the friendly and helpful staff, with which we always had a positive experience.

One of the biggest assets of the Holiday Club Saimaan Rauha, however, is definitely its location in the middle of the amazing Saimaa landscape and close to one of Finland's innumerable lakes. Apart from the hotel, there are also a lot of rentable apartments and houses, which might definitely also be a good alternative choice.

Taking all these things in consideration, the Holiday Club Saimaan Rauha is definitely a very good option if you plan to visit the region and if you don't have the highest standards.

Our cabin was remotely located from both the clubhouse, reservations, and the lake. Other than that the cabin was nice, and the Saima lake region quite nice. You do need a car or your own geared bike to enjoy this location.

We had a 2 days family holiday in the Saimaa Holiday Club. It's obvious the golden days are over in the spa. The spa itself, the hotel lobby, the breakfast room and the surrounding yard were worn out.

The room was alright, but we were told in the rules we have to report all the glasses, plates etc that we accidentally break. Otherwise the hotel staff would charge it afterwards. One (old) wine glass snapped by accident during our stay and we had to cover it by paying 6.5 euros. Tacky!!

We stayed at Saimaanranta-cottage which was really nice, equipment well also. We rent a efatbike for a day, hiked another. Scenery around Saimaa Holiday club is amazing. Visited also Spa which was not crowded on November weekdays. Spa was ok ,not very big. We had breakfast two times and I loved it. Cottages are lovely place to stay as they provides kitchen, sauna, 2 toilettes, fireplace, balcony with grill.

Room tip: Public holidays might be so crowded that no good Rooma available and Spa can be too full

We stayed two nights in a standard room with balcony. The room was not cleaned properly (chips and crumbs on the floor) and the sheets were stained. There are no blackout curtains, which is a big disappointment. I also don’t like paying extra for every single thing, like towels, bathrobes, slippers and gym. The spa is nice but very crowded with kids. One small customer left a little smelly thing in the pool and then the whole pool section was closed. Would have been nice if we had been offered a compensation as we didn’t get value for the money. However, the Saimaa lake area is very nice and scenic. There is a nice coffee house by the lake close by.

In a busy July week this place is like children's amusement park. Busy and loud. If you're looking for peace, quiet and relaxation, not easily available here. That being said, the situation is probably very different on a November or January weekday, our visit was during the busiest Finnish vacation month.

Breakfast, busy and crowded. Dinner, you'll have to queue or book a table from the more expensive option. We had a room on the "castle" (not a castle really), an okay room, but some issues with the level of housekeeping and WiFi not great.

Spa is loud, busy and targeted for children. The sauna world (separate fee) was very nice and more quiet.

The beach and the outside grounds of the hotel are nice with pieces of history remaining. A nice cafe on the beach.

Was tempted to rate this as two, but do realize that during a less busy time things might have been better. Also the staff handled our feedback well.
