In 2015 I did quite a bit of research on getting to/from the boats which will take you to the "lazy" rivers of the Mayan and natural canals. We entered the area thru a small pyramid area (nice but there are much better) located with walking distance from the bay. We tried to drive directly there this time without going to the natural/pyramid area but the road is really, really bad so avoid it at all costs. There is a small admission and the boats still run around $45.00 US and is non negotiable. The float remains INCREDIBLE. It's one of the most relaxing things you ever do anywhere on your travels. The boats are much more professionally managed now compared to 2015 but you should politely insist that only your party be on the boat. Your experience will be infinitely better. DO NOT pay for a tour to this area as it is absolutely not necessary. We had a car but the busses stop right in front of the pyramid. This remains one of my families best and surprising places to visit anywhere. One final note: Once you exit the water you have about a 3/4 mile walk back to the boat on wooden slats.

We were recommended by our hotel to check out Sian Ka’an. Riding in a boat from amazing mangrove forests into the turquoise blue water of the Caribbean was incredible. Such a peaceful and calm sanctuary. Even got to see a crocodile hanging out in the mangroves. Definitely go here!

Booked this through our tui rep. Picked up from our hotel in riviera maya at 7:45 and taken to Sian kaan reserve. A short drive to our speedboat once in reserve, we were then taken out through the mangroves seeing lots of birds on the way. We saw a wild group of dolphins with 2 babies and stopped to get photos and watch them. After about 40 mins we stopped and transferred to another boat and sped out to the ocean, quite breathtaking turquoise seas and watched the turtles coming up for air , spectacular! Then on further for spot of snorkelling ( equipment all supplied) with some great coral and fish to see then back on The boat and on to a cove for some swimming and then lunch and after a short but hot walk back to the original boat for the journey back. Fab trip with blue caribe tour company excellent guide called Limbert. Costly but highly recommended. Hot tips : use high factor sun screen as you will need it !! Apply before you get on bus for full effects and you can only apply it on a toilet stop before going to reserve so applying in your hotel room is easier and ladies make sure you cover your bottom in lotion as this will get burnt in the snorkel session !!!

We visited Sian Ka’an with booking through TUI who work through the company Blue Caribe who are an amazing and very ecologically minded company.

We went to Tulum and were told this was the last chance to apply suncream before going to the park. When we got there we saw blue crabs and then got into the boat. We saw a wild family of bottlenose dolphins, birds such as: ibis, pelicans, osprey etc. Then arrived at the port where we got another boat out to sea and managed to find a beautiful female green turtle and some eagle rays. Then we did some snorkelling for 30-40 mins on the reef. All kinds of fish: lion fish, parrot fish, angel fish, barracuda etc. We then went to Punta Allen and had a lovely time swimming in the shallow waters of the paradise Laguna. From here we went to Punta Allen for lunch- fish, chicken, rice, tortillas and amazing hibiscus water.

Then we went for a walk round the local village of Punta Allen and then made our way to the boats and saw some crocodiles in the Mangroves. It was an amazing day. So worth it. And so beautiful.

This was the only excursion we did on our 14 day trip to Mexico this summer. It proved to be an exhilarating day despite the long, bump ride from our resort a couple if hours away.
The minibus ride from Tulum is a bit bumpy as most the roads are dirt tracks, (currently being overhauled). Our trip was booked via Lomas Travel and there were only 6 in our bus so we filled one of the motorboats.
We started in the lagoon and quickly found some dolphins who were lookjng after a young dolphin. There then followed a trip around an usland to observe Frigate birds, Pelicans and Cormorants nesting. The boat then headed out towards the open sea where we were fortunate to observe a sea turtle breaking the surface.
The boat then headed off to a snorkelling spot where we spent 20-40 minutes observing the coral and fish below the surface. I recommend you bring a waterproof camera.
Our final boat stop was a swimming area around 5 feet deep, arohnd 200m offshore, with crystal clear waters where everyone cooled off before headingoff for a final boat ride to a local village for lunch.
After a walk around the journey back to our resort took 2.5 hours.
