“a Great Inn? ......yes!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 February 2012

We chose The Boars Head from the website "Great Inns of Britain"...." a collection of independent, historic, stylish inns"
Having already stayed at three of them....Grassington House (excellent), The Pheasant (very good) and The Inn at Whitewell (not reviewed, but excellent) they are in very good company.
Easy parking on arrival, opposite the front door. Impressed with the look and feel of the hotel. We had booked one night in a superior room...."White".....and the room size, bathroom, toiletries, robes, chocolate boars on the pillows (!) were all fine. The room is very traditional with a view to the front...but some of the furniture is looking very tired. We had a pre-dinner drink in the bar (bistro) which was buzzing with early diners....unfortunately most of the hand pulled beers were off. Dinner in the restaurant (brasserie) was very relaxed, food and service were very good, but the well worn laminated menu just did not look right. Back to the bar, which by now was quiet, for a couple of nightcaps....but a bit off-putting to have the staff close all of the tables around us at 10pm. Never mind, breakfast was very good and the included tickets for Ripley Castle are a real plus....there are only five rooms open, but the guide was so informative and funny.
Overall, a very good performance by all at the Boar's Head, thank you.

Thanks for posting a review .
It sounds like you may be part way round a tour of all of The Great Inns of Britain. What a Great idea !!
We are delighted to hear that enjoyed your stay ,giving comments like "great " & " impressed ",but we must also take some of your other comments and act upon them.
Our exciting new seasonal menu was introduced this week so our apologies that you got a well used copy of our previous menu during your stay,we will make sure that we discard any of the new ones before they start to look tired.
We are constantly maintaining all areas of The Inn and will continue to do so.
Fantastic to read that you enjoyed the complimentary Castle Tour.
We look forward to welcoming you back soon as part of your continued tour around The Great Inns.

We booked a superior room at internet rates and found ourselves across a small road from the main hotel which was a bit of a surprise but not a problem. Our room was exactly as in the photos: a good sized comfortable bed made up of two singles put together, seating and a feature fireplace (not in use but it looked nice). There were added extras such as a small decanter of sherry, apples and a couple of home made biscuits, a proper teapot and real coffee. No real milk though.
The bathroom was very large and contained a big roll top bath as well as a separate shower and bathrobes.
We ate in the hotel both evenings and enjoyed the food and the varied menu. Some meals came with vegetables, some didn't so you had to order a side dish. I always find that annoying; although overall the meals were good value. I didn't like that they sprinkled big salt crystals on the side dishes of veg. The breakfast scrambled eggs were some of the best I've eaten.
Staff were very friendly, helpful and efficient which always helps to create a good atmosphere.
We enjoyed the free entry to the castle grounds and deer park and the fact that you can go for a quite long country walk straight out of the hotel if you don't want to drive.
Overall we had a relaxing, comfortable time and would go again.

Me and my partner booked this as a last minute night away in the country as we live in yorkshire and it turned out to be a real bargain. The room was lovely and had some nice little touches such as a cafetiere and a teapot as well as a selection of different teas, coffees and hot chocolates.
With the hotel you get a free ticket to ripley castle as the hotel is situated in the castle estate And we had a walk around the castle garden, lake and deer park which was very nice on a dry but cold day.
The food at the hotel was top quality and we thoroughly enjoyed our evening meal as well as our breakfast. The atmosphere in the bistro was relaxed and the staff were extremely helpful and the food was fantastic as well as well priced.
The only negative I could say is that the room was very hot and so we found it hard to sleep but this did not put us off enjoying our stay.

This is a lovely traditional country hotel with a warm and welcoming atmosphere and we would definitely go again.

Room Tip: We booked a small double room and expected a very small room however we thought it was a good size c...

Good to see that more and more people that live only a relatively short distance from us are visiting Ripley for a short ,value for money ,enjoyable break and experiencing all that Ripley and TheBoar's Head has to offer.
The list of things that you enjoyed whilst with us should inspire many more visitors to come and see us,so many thanks.
The hot room situation could have been easily avoided as all of our radiators have individual thermostatic controls. Please let us know if you are planning another visit and we will adjust the temperature accordingly in your room so that you can be even more comfortable.
We look forward to seeing you both again soon.

We had a celebration Sunday lunch on 12/2/12, and thoroughly enjoyed it. The staff were friendly and the service impeccable - swift without rushing us. Food delicious - plenty of choice, well-cooked and full of flavour. Coffee in the lounge with home-made chocolates - perfect.
My only gripe is that I think vegetables should be included, not come as an extra.

Lovely review,excellent comments.
Great to read your summary following your recent celebration lunch with us.
I know that the whole team will be chuffed with your comments.
In response to the vegetable situation ,we include suitable vegetables with each dish and feel that what we put on each and every plate offers a full and balanced meal ,so the small charge that we make for extra portions of vegetables and many of the other side orders that we offer are there for those that may just want that little extra.
Thanks again for your comments and I do hope we will see you again soon.

Just returned from The Boars Head Hotel, what a find!! we stayed for three nights 13th, 14th & 15th Feb 2012 . We ate in the Restauant all three nights, Tueday being Valentines night, we opted for the special 5 course dinner and the only thing I can say regarding all Breakfasts and Dinners - absolutely fantastic!! We stayed in the Yellow room, it was well furnished, warm, very clean and comfortable. We were treated with old fashioned courtesy by all staff.. We will be back.
