We stayed at the Delfinia in late September 2015. The hotel is extremely spacious, set in in large grounds with shady walks through olive groves down to its own beach with beds and rustic shades, and a beautiful large well-appointed pool with bar/restaurant and poolside beds, and fantastic views.
Breakfast is excellent with a copious selection of largely home-made Greek delicacies, including some hot choices, either on the spacious terrace or indoors. Rooms are fine, we had a balcony with brilliant view. Any issues are dealt with immediately by the excellent staff. Some reviews say the décor in public areas is dated; I’d say it has character, far preferable to ultra-modern tat. Overall the public areas are spacious, comfortable and welcoming, with nice bars and attentive and friendly staff.
Molyvos (Methymna), a few minutes walk or very short drive, is a beautiful sprawling fishing-type village with a quaint harbour, narrow alleys with covered markets and shady squares, and loads of superb cafes, tea-rooms and restaurants. Topped by a magnificent castle. There are other nearby villages such as Petra, also with many excellent seafront restaurants; all the restaurants we visited served wonderful food at superb value.
The island is large and fascinating, loads of places to visit: villages, museums, churches, monasteries, castles, petrified forest, birds, well-signposted walks, good bus service (between main towns) and plentiful cheap taxis, good roads (better than we expected – most are metalled even though some maps show otherwise). People are exceptionally friendly and helpful everywhere.
Quite a few refugees were coming and going while we were there, but the transfer from landing to reception/police and departure port was well-organised. We brought some clothes over (airlines allow a charity bag free) and occasionally gave lifts to families. This is of course a human tragedy on a grand scale which we are all aware of and Lesbos brings it home, and they are simply grateful to have made it safely to a safe haven. That doesn’t stop us getting on with life and enjoying holidays, and our enjoyment of Lesbos was not impacted in the slightest. It is a wonderful place for a holiday, ticks all the boxes, and the Delfinia is a perfect place to stay.
