“A bit upscale, but we came out satisfied”
Review of A Terra Fornaria

A Terra Fornaria
Ranked #5 of 26 Restaurants in Furnas
Certificate of Excellence
Description: More than a restaurant, À Terra is a way of life. Inspired in Mother Nature’s products and returning to the origins and to what is pure and genuine. We invite you to visit this warm and engaging place.where one is served with love, and the food is prepared with both expertise and great passion. À Terra is a restaurant with homemade, delicious, healthy food. Conceived as a place for sharing, with a continuous service, it uses many local ingredients. Rustic life is back to nourish one’s soul with the warm comfort of things that are close to one’s memories: aromas, textures, colours, flavours, melodies, sensations, stories... all life’s familiar ingredients that make us truly happy. The wood oven and the Josper are the “main actors”: pastas, pizzas, bruschettas, various roasts and grills prepared in the Portuguese traditional style, are some of the things you can taste. Additionally, the À TERRA proposes fresh salads, rice with local vegetables and herbs from the aromatic garden, “gratins” and others. Sharing continues through dessert, when we suggest sweet pies, homemade ice-creams, banana Josper and last, but not the least, a rich, flavourful expresso. Bread is one of the restaurant’s central features. Baked in a wood oven you will find fresh bread all through out the day: from early morning till late afternoon. When outside the restaurant, take some time to relax on its lounge and to visit the aromatic garden. Visit our lobby market to buy some of the products and utensils used in the restaurant or other local delicacies.

We had trouble deciding where to go so we checked ot the menu. They had an opening so we decided to give it a try. The wait staff seemed slightly stiff at first but quickly warmed up when they realized we weren't put off by the prices. The carpaccio was a good appetizer. The main courses were fine. The coffee was good and so was the dessert. My wife and I had the same impression after finishing. The meal was actually better than we thought it would be. The prices were a little high and the servings were a little small. We spent 75 euros. Would we go there again? Maybe. If you want to try something a little more expensive and "modern" you could then give a thought to this place/

After eating at the Terra Nostra Garden Hotel, we were looking for another quality restaurant in Furnas and the TripAdvisor reviews suggested this may well be the place.

We arrived at 7pm and were seated in the "outside area" which is an underglass terrace. There are patio heaters and smoking is allowed on the terrace. This area was fairly busy but the inside restaurant area was empty. We therefore accepted the advice to be seated outside, even though it was November. On reflection this was a bad choice, it was cool, and there were insects around. Given the restaurant was still not busy when we left I'm surprised that most guests preferred to sit outside.

I was disappointed to find that there was no craft beer on offer - just Especial and Super Bock as "local" offerings.

My wife chose the vegetable lasagne which was disappointing - pasta seemed overcooked, flavour missing and the accompanying vegetables (beetroot and carrot) were underdone. They had clearly been cooked with the cauliflower that was cooked correctly - root vegetables take longer!

Service was a little slow given the number of people eating and we felt the waiting staff may have been pushed to cope - certainly when compared with the Terra Nostra Garden Hotel.

Wow. I still think I might be sick from eating the tasteless pork terrine with it's fabulous side of bread ends and butter. If it wasn't for the flies that were all over our wine glasses and salad maybe we would be more satisfied. I'm glad the service and restaurant style at least appeared to be good when we walked in since it was hard to tell the waiters and chefs that their food was worse than what we would find in a kitchen sink drain. The salad was a small handful of iceberg lettuce with about 3 cherry tomatoes and watery amount of buffalo mozzarella. This came with our pizza that seemed be topped with a bag kraft cheese. A child could have made this food better. We finished 3 slices of a whole pizza, two bites of salad and 1 bite of terrine before our confused waiter came and took all of our food away. All for the low low price of 39 euros. I felt sick for a full day today and just waiting for it to come out of one end ( not sure which) at some point. Make your own food or get something from the vending machine. Can I give this a minus 5 review.

We ended up eating here 3 times during our stay in Furnas. Wanted to try as much of the menu as possible. They had very high quality food cooked excellently. The price was also very reasonable for that quality. The staff were exceptionally nice and gave some great recommendations.

The atmosphere was lovely and the restaurant will only cater to the appropriate number of people they can look after properly rather than cramming as many people in as possible. We loved it.

The desserts were also fantastic so save some room if you can.

I read about the hotel and restaurant before I arrived in Furnas and it was my intention to try food there. I was not disappointed. Interior was modern and stylish with open kitchen. So you can watch how food prepared.
Chef not only explained but showed the fish before i decided to order it.
The starter and main course were such delicious that I could not resist and ordered a dessert. All were at my highest expectation.
The waiter gave me a good hints for wine to make my dinner just perfect.
Not cheap but great experience of combination local food and invention.
