Overlooking the church bell towers, mountain and harbor, Veranda provides a romantic vista in an intimate setting. And that view is only enhanced with one of their extremely well-made cocktails. It may seem counter-intuitive for a Greek Island, but there are several Italian options on Hydra. Veranda is the upper end. But to get to that upper end aerie you’re going to have to climb some stairs—a lot of them. Seems a bit silly to get sly about stairs on Hydra, the village built on stairs, but Veranda may hold the record. Although not especially crisp, the service is personable, the pasta presented in generous portions, the greeting warm, and the wine at correct temperatures. Although spaghetti rules the menu, there are a few other fish options. We thought the bream carpaccio itself was well worth the climb.
