VERY DISAPPOINTED

2.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 24 Aug 2012
I stayed at this hotel 4 years ago, 9 out of 10 then. Now below 4 - it hasn't aged well. there must have been a change in owner/management, last time the staff couldn't do enough to help, this time only a couple of the staff were helpful, the rest were useless!

Breakfast is poor, once the good runs out they dont refill!

We would strongly recommend new hut resturant 300yards away. Great service at great prices!

Stayed here originally as part of group tour then decided to stay on for four further nights after upgrading to ocean view room. Rooms are spacious, nice enough for $70 per night, few issues with design of bathroom and water overflow, gardens are lovely. Restaurant, bar and pool are on beachfront - food is good, plenty of choice, Happy Hour drinks, pool is clean and plenty of shade if needed. Breakfast is pretty ordinary and take care if you eat late as food has been sitting out in the heat for quite some time. Wifi only works in foyer areas which is a bit annoying. They have a good library and computers for use though. Walking distance to ATM, supermarket and other restaurants. Nice view out to fishermans boats etc and easy walk down beach to Beach Republic etc resorts. Staff are very helpful and nice. Looks like quite new. They provide a taxi service with nice aircon van 600B to airports. Good value for money.

Room tip: Ocean view rooms lovely

First things first, don't expect to swim in the sea in front of this hotel. The view is great and it looks spectacular, but it mainly serves as a harbour for small craft and is really not good for swimming. Besides that, this is really a nice hotel. We stayed in seaview rooms and the view was great, especially at sunset. Breakfast was good, and the small pool serves its purpose. The price of the food and room service is amazingly reasonable. This hotel is a good choice if you want to get value for money (very difficult in overpriced and overhyped Samui). Stay at Samaya Bura and rent a vehicle so that you can get to the one or two beaches on the island where you can swim.

Room tip: Its worth paying a few hundred baht for the seaview, but don't bother with the pool access rooms. Unless you are a super-athlete, you will battle to get out of the pool in front of your room

This hotel is located convenient to local shops and spas. There are 2 pools, the one by the beach is heavily used and therefore has a sunscreen slick by 4pm, the other one is slightly bigger and is rarely used. Breakfast is very good and you can walk along the beach and choose where to eat dinner. Room was clean and good with view over the beach. Beach is not great to swim from as it shelves very slowly, but great to walk along.

Room tip: do not book a room on the road side as the view is horrible and noisy

Lastminute.com shows that Samaya Bura have self-rated themselves as 4 star, Samaya Bura have wishful thinking that’s for sure! They’re 2 star at best.

When we arrived the hotel looked amazing, but it soon became clear once we got to our room that it definitely lacked polish (to put it politely). Our mountain view room is actually a road view room that never sees the sun. The road is noisy and busy all the time. The towel rack outside had mushrooms growing on it. I decide to shower, there was no hot water, this happened for the entire 5 nights we stayed. There was literally a flood on the bathroom floor when I showered, the levelling of the bath/shower is obviously not angled correctly as all the water ran down the side wall of the bath and streamed like a waterfall ALL OVER the bathroom floor, I think the hotel staff know this as they supply a pink towel that’s positioned at the end of the bath to apparently soak up the flood, that towel is drenched within seconds and doesn’t stop any water flow! My husband showered after me and the faucet broke, an engineer arrived promptly though and fixed it.

After one night of the main road noise we upgraded to a poolside room, I recommend doing this if you stay here. The bathroom plumbing/flood situation was the same in our new room! Bizarre, the entire hotel bathrooms must have this issue? Our room cleaning wasn’t great, we arrived to find an old tissue and dental floss in the stones under the bathroom sink. Hotel needs to buy new towels, they were so thrashed our towels were grayish in colour and frayed. The bed was as hard as a rock. The TV channel options are crap.

The poolside lounge cushions are all ripped, the decks are damaged and there are quite a few rotten boards (why would you have untreated timber to go around a pool??) The brown pool towels were the same quality as room towels, frayed and needed replacing.

We never saw anyone dine in the hotel restaurant, after ordering room service and poolside snacks that was no mystery, food was gross. Breakfast was ok, although they don’t come and refill your coffee and the placemats were dirty.

One of the worst hotels we’ve stayed in.

Room tip: Choose a poolside room.
