The hotel is in a very nice place about half way along the Crinan Canal, we stayed due to the location and view to the canal, lock number 5 is right outside. Enter through the main door and there is no real reception are as such, a desk with a bell to ring if no-one is there. There is a tow path so great access to walk alongside the water. Plenty of free car parking places, there is a restaurant, lounge and bar. We were a family group which required two single rooms, both were of a good size, one was on the ground floor so great for anyone with difficulty or in a wheelchair however there were two sets of two steps but nothing that could not be coped with, one of our party did have some difficulty walking but was able to cope easily enough. The ground floor room looked out onto the car park and with no net curtains or blinds was easy for people passing to look in so curtains drawn quite a lot and I parked the car outside the window for more privacy. Two single beds, wardrobe and usual tea and coffee making facilities, small bathroom. The other room was on the first floor overlooking the canal, this had a bigger bathroom which did not have net curtains or blinds and as the hotel was lower than the road it was easy to look...The hotel is in a very nice place about half way along the Crinan Canal, we stayed due to the location and view to the canal, lock number 5 is right outside. Two single beds, wardrobe and usual tea and coffee making facilities, small bathroom. The other room was on the first floor overlooking the canal, this had a bigger bathroom which did not have net curtains or blinds and as the hotel was lower than the road it was easy to look in from the canal bank, curtains drawn. There was a chest of drawers in front of the bathroom window which I can only assume was to give a modicum of privacy. Adjacent to this room was a 'new' water pump which feeds the hotel seems to recharge very often irrespective of whether the water is used, toilet if flushed and it goes on all through the night so not a lot of sleep, if you are a light sleeper this is not the room for you. The bathrooms have a bath and an electric shower over the bath not a separate cubicle. Furniture was all old style in keeping with the hotel. There was free wifi in the hotel but was not a good enough signal to reach our rooms it seemed more to be serving the bar area. There is a choice of where to eat in the hotel, the bar has basic tables and chairs, the lounge with is like a conservatory with sofas and comfy chairs but the tables are very low, the restaurant looked nice enough with white table cloths, pity there is not a view from the restaurant other than the car park. The menu is the same for each location, the paper menu is not very big, most of the meals are on a very large blackboard in the bar, specials perhaps. There was only one steak on the menu, sirloin, and have to say it seemed expensive, upwards of £20 for 8oz, that said, the food was very nice although the description of mine was not what I thought it would be, but again very nice. The bar is very traditional looking with bar stools, some high tables with stools as well as the normal tables, a good choice of spirits and three ale pumps (all nice, tried them all) which was surprising for a hotel, usually lucky if you can get one. There are steps from the bar to the lounge, about four of them then more steps from the lounge to the restaurant, another four elongated steps. , There is a quiet residents lounge with sofas, chairs and a piano, nice place to sit and relax after a day sightseeing with a glass of wine. Breakfast was served the restaurant, there were 8 people in the area when we went down, not many eating. We were there for 20 mins before anyone came to ask if we wanted coffee/tea and to take a cooked breakfast order. we were actually in the restaurant for 45 mins before we received breakfast, when it came it was very nice, had to ask for marmalade as nothing was out. We asked about the service and found out there was only one young lad working, this was really not very good at all. The staff were friendly and chatty, not the chap at breakfast, he didn't have time poor chap, he did well considering. Probably be a while before we head back that way again but would stay again quite happily, but not in the first floor singles room.More
