This was a very nice property. We stayed at the fairmont in Hawaii. So assumed it would be just as beautiful and or was..We had an ocean view room. Very clean. Restaurant was very good. We left the property and visited several other places to eat.

In late August my family travelled to Barbados for the first time. We’ve travelled quite extensively throughout the Caribbean but had only seen Barbados for a few hours on stopover from Mustique, so this year we decided to make it our destination. After many years of beach vacations, I wasn’t convinced we were going to see anything different so my expectations were not sky high. I was wrong.

The Island itself offers a lot to do for those of you who can’t sit still for too long, while also home to gorgeous beaches and plenty of spots to unwind. The Fairmont Royal Pavillion is an excellent place to call home during your stay.

The
hotel is the oldest beachfront hotel on the island, and when I say “beachfront” I. really mean, like it’s right ON the beach. The property boasts a fantastic array of well manicured trees, plants and flowers that seem to all have been there for decades. This is due to the fact that Barbados has not had to endure a hurricane since 1955 (and before that, the 1870’s). Because of where the island is positioned, hurricanes usually turn away from it due to the jet streams, and avoid it entirely. This leads to it having some of the most beautiful greenery, trees and landscapes that we’ve ever seen. The Fairmont takes advantage of this and uses its incredible grounds to wow you from the moment you enter its long driveway, buffeted by 100ft tall palm trees.

The hotel itself is lovely, although it seems in need of a refresh in places. The indoor/outdoor lobby has fountains and a fish pond (great for kids as our son absolutely loved feeding them daily) and exudes an “old” Caribbean vibe. The ram fast buffet dining area is grand and right on the water, while the restaurant rests on the opposite side of the property and is more intimate. The pool is very well appointed with comfortable seating surrounding it, and the beachfront is absolutely stunning.

Our room was on the third floor, and was extremely well appointed and made us all feel very relaxed the moment we entered it. All of the rooms have been recently redone, and there will be more subtle phases of renovations that will be going forward while the hotel closes for the off season. Our room had a large balcony with a lounging bed, table and chairs and an incredible sunset view every evening. Each room we had a small refrigerator which was handy for keeping a few items we bought for our four year old son nice and fresh.

The staff was extremely nice and very helpful in recommending restaurants and also day trips and how to best navigate the island as we had rented a car. Very staff person was very friendly and knowledgeable about the goings on on the island and every evening we returned to the Fairmont, we were greeted by a friendly face.

I also used the fitness center which was clean and had all the necessities for and average workout, and my wife thoroughly enjoyed the beach yoga classes that the Fairmont offered. The restaurant was good, if unspectacular with lunches being our preferred meal there.

The location of the Fairmont is absolutely perfect as a launching pad to explore Barbados. Holetown (home to a bevy of great dining spots and the Limegrove Lifestyle Center) is 5mins drive away, and all of the other Caribbean Coast restaurants in Barbados are no more than a 10 minute drive.

We highly recommend the Fairmont Royal Pavilion as an excellent place to stay if you are planning to visit Barbados.

We spent 9 nights at the Fairmont in August following 4 busy days exploring New York. From the moment we arrived we received top class service and this continued throughout our stay. The food was first class from the extensive breakfast buffet through to the beautiful al la carte evening menu. The rooms were well equipped and we had 2 connecting rooms given we travelled as a family. The view every morning was ‘to die for’ and we could hear the waves lapping against the shore as we lay in bed. The beach was right outside the hotel and never short of sun loungers & complimentary towels laid out by the obliging staff. The sea was calm and ideal for swimming and snorkelling. The hotel’s water-sports team were always on hand and we enjoyed kayaking, stand up paddle boarding and swimming with turtles at 9.30 am every morning - awesome! We went to Barbados looking for memories we would never forget and the Fairmont helped make that happen - we will be back!

On check in, everything was perfect, from the rum punch on arrival, to the explanation of the rooms (we have two beachfront junior suites, which are a must if you come here). We can sit on our private terrace and hop over the Low wall onto the sand and into the sea only a few metres away. Personalised toiletries were a nice touch too.
Breakfast is a delight with a wide range in the buffet plus a great egg station that provides any type of eggs and lovely omelettes.
Afternoon tea is perfectly timed from 4pm to get you through to dinner in Taboras restaurant on-site.
Dinner includes a nice range of local and international dishes, which are high quality and nothing has disappointed so far (after 5 nights, with 5 to go), and the snack/lounge menu is also available including beef burger sliders, pizza from the pizza oven and various kids options.
The water sports centre with Ryan at the helm is very welcoming and well run. Ryan very keenly offers a range of activities and knows the area very well. Ryan also offers to take people up the beach to see the local turtles and he really cares, which is a nice touch as many such facilities can feel a bit distant in their customer service.
Snorkelling is good and safe with a pontoon and small reef at one end of the resort. Snorkelling at other resorts (e.g. The House and Mango Bay) are better but there are also other beaches on the island with great reefs and wrecks to explore, so snorkelling while on a catamaran may be a better option in the main, and kayaking, paddle boarding or hobie cat sailing and swimming are good options.
The only disappointments (and management really should address these) are the manager’s welcome evening on a Tuesday and the water sports centre not having pedal-boats. The issues with the welcome evening are the lack of entertainment and the two stalls offering poor range and quality goods. Diamonds International’s table was sparsely stocked, which is a missed opportunity as these stalls in other resorts usually offer showpieces as part of the entertainment. The other artist stall was also poorly stocked. We left the drink and stalls quite quickly and moved onto dinner, which was much more enjoyable.
Overall, we’ll happily return, and hopefully the management will address the small niggles.
