What a wonderful hotel. Lovely hosts, great food and in a beautiful village. So much to do in the area. Touring by car or wonderful walking. Low and high level. The hotel is spotlessly clean, beautifully kept. Rooms over looking the garden are worth it and several have balconies, would love to return.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the garden are lovely and quiet.

One of the best hotels I have stayed at - the staff are so welcoming and friendly; the rooms are all unique, well-appointed and clean; the food, especially breakfast, is superb and, all the time, we were greeted by smiles from the owner, his wife and the staff. They found us a wonderful taxi driver who made the trip so easy. If you are going to the south of France then forget the huge, international hotels - at the Arraya you will find the real France!

Quintessential hotel in quintessential little village about 30 minutes from the coast. The hotel overlooks the town square with its pelota court and small covered market. Our "prestige" room had a small balcony overlooking the hotel's garden, big comfortable bed, charming linens, and a big bathroom with modern plumbing including jetted shower. Parking is pretty easy in this town. The hotel does a very nice little breakfast, lunch/dinner service on a leafy terrace when weather permits, and otherwise comfortable dining room with lots of windows. It's a relaxing setting with not much to do in this town except walks in the countryside, but also good base for hikers, nature lovers, and aspiring gourmets.....the area was aflood with local cepes mushrooms today after a couple of rainy days last week! Hotel Arraya is run by two brothers. We only met Jean but he is a wonderfully not obtrusive but attentive host, and introduced us to the pleasure of 20 year old armagnac. The armagnac library goes back to 1924. This is the kind of hotel one always hopes to find in France, and I can't imagine anyone could do any better in the area!

Overall we liked staying here. The hotel, which is old and full of character, was comfortable and well-equipped. We had a room at the back, which was quiet and had views of the distant hills. Staying in Sare is good for walking and visits to the sea at good resorts like Saint-Jean-de-Luz. Food was good, although the restaurant struggled to meet our dietary needs and ran out of options for something different after two days. One of the waiters was very slow to serve us but fortunately the management later picked up on this and another took over. Staff and management were generally very polite and helpful.

Room Tip: Ensure you get a room at the back for quietness

A lovely hotel in the centre of the small Basque town of Sare. We had stayed many years ago and had very happy memories of the place. We arrived to find the town in Fete mode, full of people and stalls. Luckily we were able to park and walk to the hotel where we were directed to the nearby private parking. All just as remembered: attentive owners, good staff, great position. We were in one of the smaller rooms on the first floor: I believe the others have been updated. A pretty garden behind the hotel, lovely old furniture inside, a nice outside space to eat, drink and people watch. The food is excellent, although a limited menu so if staying longer, perhaps it is worth exploring the other places on offer (not many). A good centre to visit the wonderful Basque region.
