This is one of the most popular levada walks and our group met quite a few people. The walk is not very long, ca 4 km, and not too strenous. If you are in a group you will probably do this in combinaltion with the levada 25 fontes.

Heading up to Rabacal directly north from Calheta is an adventure, travelling on roads that will leave you wondering if you will ever leave the wilderness! Levada do Risco Trail Hike (PR6-1), if combined with the 25 Fontes (Springs) hike (PR-6), is approx. 8 + km hike one way. The hikes can be approached as two separate walks. To see the Levada do Risco (PR 6-1) where you experience a huge but narrow waterfall (1000m above sea level), take ER 110 to ER 211 (Estrada Dr. Roberto Monteiro) near Rabacal and go south to the parking area. Here you will find a large trail sign. Your hike to the falls begins here and it’s about 1 km in. You will see a tunnel when you get to the falls. The tunnel goes to the PR-6 trail hike. You can either follow the long tunnel from here to the 25 Fontes (25 Springs) or go back up to the highway and drive over to the other side and begin the first part of the PR6 hike there. Either way, PR6 is longer and more challenging than PR6-1 but we’ll worth the effort. (Separate review)

My husband and I did this hike in conjunction with 25 Fontes so it was a really good hike. We drove up on ER 110 and found the parking spot ... not easy to miss because the parking lot was already filling up with cars so you know you are on the right track.

The first part of the hike was easy since we descended the mountain. The Rabacal house is about 2-3 kms. down and they have toilets ... don't expect the Ritz Hotel, though. Anyway, we did a detour to Levada do Risco to check out the waterfall. At this time, the water flow was minimal but I think it was still worth visiting this place because the hike itself is quite nice. I can just imagine how much heavier and spectacular this waterfall would be during rainy season.

Remember what I said about the first part of the hike? You have to retrace your steps back up to the parking lot. Be prepared to hike 1290 meters up .. a great way to get the heart going! We also watched the clouds roll in as we hiked up. Beautiful!

If you don't want to do much effort, take the shuttle bus (running after 10 am) and you have an easy walk. Just walking down some 100 steps (and up when you return). The walk itself is short and horizontal.
