My second time in Wonosobo. Hotels here are scarce especially decent ones. And if they are decent, they are generally costly. Locals recommended this and it is the PERFECT type of homestay accommodation to go with a small town lifestyle. Not only affordable but also more than decent. We were in a group of ten and took four rooms.

Duta is located within a five-minute walk to the morning market and another ten minutes to the town square - AlunAlun Wonosobo. There are four bedrooms in the main bungalow and two more mini chalets (charmingly restored rice barns) in the garden - all come with ensuite bathrooms. Mr Elly the owner lives just behind the house in a separate annex and is usually at hand to prepare breakfast or take care of things.

The house is lovingly decorated with a myriad of local artefacts, antiques and artwork - a veritable museum. Comfortable chairs and sofas are scattered throughout the spacious living room if you need a quiet spot to read or relax. Rooms are simple but clean and cozy. (While towels are provided, you will need to bring your personal toiletries.) The house is set within a beautifully lush garden - a restful oasis unless the neighbouring muezzin is broadcasting his early hour call to prayer.

Privacy could be an issue because the curtains do not close properly. The room interiors can be seen through the common terrace outside. The water pressure is weak and the hot water supply erratic during peak hours. Wished there was a ceiling fan in the room to improve the air circulation. Those were generally the only "issues" we encountered and easily rectified if Mr Elly took action. Would be nice if he did. A five-star rating would then be well-deserved. Nonetheless we would still be back. Without hesitation.

To be fair the house is really spacious and big with adequate common area. Free breakfast, coffee and tea is also a bonus. Hot water is also sufficient and a good thing.

However, we didn't get "marveled" by the service provided - it was quite normal (perhaps it was the busy season).

More importantly though was that ventilation was extremely bad. There are NO fans in the rooms (not to mention AC) and the mosquito situation is crazy. Once stepped out into the living room, one will definitely get bites so you either have a stuffy room or a mosquito infested room. Even with both garden and main door closed, we still got bitten quite badly.

We are surprised that almost no one else has mentioned the above points of no fans and numerous mosquitoes or else we would not have booked the room, not to mention at 350k a night since it was the peak season. Couldn't wait to leave the bites behind although Mr. Helly was nice to let us late checkout due to delay from the minibus not leaving Dieng.

The city itself is a mess, and a lot of hotels are like trash (dead and alive bugs everywhere, everything filthy and so on), however, this place was something really of a standout: peaceful, calm, clean - including private garden. The neighboring mosque is waking you up on sunrise, though :)

I stayed at the Duta Homestay for two nights as a base for visiting the Dieng Plateau. The deluxe rooms are lovely, with beautiful private bathrooms, and open onto a central garden (there are also cheaper rooms). The museum-like main room contains the owner's beautiful collection of antiques and curios. Breakfast and free coffee & tea are provided. The excellent central market is a 5-minute walk, and buses to Dieng and the Wonosobo terminal are convenient. Heli, the owner, speaks good English and toured me around the villages to see the tofu-making process and an unexpected celebration. I definitely recommend Duta Homestay.

for visiting the Dieng Plateau, Duta homestay is a very good place. The owner speaks good English, he is friendly and very helpful. Big rooms with bathroom, very clean. The living room is beautiful decorated by the owner. he is a freak of big moto's. Good breakfast. Parking and wifi included

Room Tip: all the rooms are the same
