I stayed at the Duta Homestay for two nights as a base for visiting the Dieng Plateau. The deluxe rooms are lovely, with beautiful private bathrooms, and open onto a central garden (there are also cheaper rooms). The museum-like main room contains the owner's beautiful collection of antiques and curios. Breakfast and free coffee & tea are provided. The excellent central market is a 5-minute walk, and buses to Dieng and the Wonosobo terminal are convenient. Heli, the owner, speaks good English and toured me around the villages to see the tofu-making process and an unexpected celebration. I definitely recommend Duta Homestay.

for visiting the Dieng Plateau, Duta homestay is a very good place. The owner speaks good English, he is friendly and very helpful. Big rooms with bathroom, very clean. The living room is beautiful decorated by the owner. he is a freak of big moto's. Good breakfast. Parking and wifi included

Room Tip: all the rooms are the same

We had a bungalow in mister Helly his homestay. It was like something I haven't seen before, like a mini-house. It was really clean, the bed was comfortable and the breakfast the next day was ok. Complementary good coffee, water and tea. And the house is like a museum, so much ornaments around the place that make it like something else.

Room Tip: Go for the bungalow!

Duta Homestay, wonosobo

1) Hotel
Service: Heli manages the 4 room Homestay, which is a real homestay. He helps in any way and is a nice guy but very brief. Definitely not a smalltalker.

Room: the rooms are clean, have seperate beds, and curtains that do not fully close. The architecture and materials are like in europe. You have a small terrace with chairs and a garden in front.
Biggest minus, the rooms do not have air condition or a fan. They should get a nice big fan asap. The next mosque is quite close so you will most likely wake up every morning 4am. The younger singer sings very beautifully but still you get woken. Its not long so i felt asleep again most of the time.

Sanitary Areas: look good and are clean. Towels only, no soap or dryer.

Breakfast: Baked mostly sweet stuff, which is not bad and some egg and fruits. Not what i like to eat in the morning but decent apart from the marmelade that was atrocious.

Price: 300k per night.

Extras: free water and tea in the mainroom and wifi, which sadly only works in the main room.

2) Restaurants and attractions nearby:
Very few. The "asia" restaurant 2 streets away is hillariously overpriced and sprays the charm of a storage room. A bit up the road is a 'rocket chicken' which is basically kentucky fried chicken, if you like that. We tryed it, was cheap and ok. Better Take the 8-10 Minute walk to the 'resto garden' in the north. Its also a nice walk as long as it is not too hot. It is superior in location, taste and price.

3) Transport: bus 65k from Jogyakarta. Bus to the Dieng Plateau 12k, but close to impossible to get as a tourist.

4) General: wonosobo does not have much attraction. Its a base for the dieng plateau and everybody knows. People greet you from time to time but you are quite free to move around. As for the people whos service you need, they will mostly try to rip you off. Especially regular bus drivers (not the ones you call) and shops. They dont negotiate much and pretend its a higher fixed price even if you know the real price. Very unpleasent compared to sumatra and java before. Kind of spoils your day if you feel like a milking cow.
There are exceptions you should go for. Ask Heli or you positive contacts but expect to pay more.

We were a little bit concerned about some of the reviews here. But I have to say that the Homestay was clean and not so bad as it was descripted. Clean bath and rooms. Breakfast was ok. Not a wellness temple at all but ok for one or two nights. for improvement an air van would be great. People were really nice and helpful.
