During a car tour of Spain's 'white villages' we stumbled across Hacienda Minerva. After struggling to drive around the hillside town of Zuheros and finding the entire village booked out, the Hacienda was a welcome relief from miniature streets, no parking and minimal services in the villages. Sometimes you simply want to relax unashamedly. This accommodation is from another time and another place,
surrounded by dramatic hillsides and crags covered in geometric patterns of olive trees, with views sweeping beyond the horizon. Its tight cluster of old buildings has been changed into an isolated "plantation-stay" venue, complete with a really excellent restaurant, bars, reading room, pool and soaring breakfast terrace. Located a few kilometers before the turn-off to Zuheros, you may need Google Maps to find it, but it's worth the effort. It's privately owned and therefore not hotel-like, it's informal yet professional. Above all, it is an integral part of the view. I won't run riot with superlatives in this review, but advise you to seek it out. It's at least as good as a Parador and half the price. The Hacienda itself has a few maintenance issues but nothing major. At the price this is a rare bargain in this most spectacular area of Spain.

Room Tip: Every room offers a great view.

Hacienda Minerva is in a rural location with lovely views of the hills surrounding the little town of Zuheros and near the Via Verde Subbettica bike path. There is a nice terrace with a great view of the countryside. However, this hotel has seen better days and is in need of maintenance. Showers had mold and the shower faucet did not work properly. We were part of a biking group and some in our group complained about mold on the walls of the bedroom. Three people in our group all got sick the day after we arrived here -- which made me wonder if it was a food-related issue from the dinner the night before. Given these issues I can't recommend this hotel and would suggest travelers look elsewhere.

As part of a biking tour of Andalusia, our group stayed in this rural hotel for two nights. It is beautifully situated, by the bike trail and a lovely 2 km walk from the quaint little hilltop village of Zuheros. Views of the olive groves are unforgettable.

The hotel itself is a very interesting building, with courtyards and several scenic rooftop terraces, including one for breakfast.

Each room is slightly different. Ours had a little sitting area with a fireplace. Others had two floors. However, not all were equally comfortable and some had problems with their showers and the water pressure for flushing the toilets.

The property has so much potential but could use some tender loving care to get everything spruced up and in good working order. Still, it is a very special spot.

We stayed in this hotel for one night as part of a large cycling group.
The hotel itself is interesting, being spread out over a large area with eternal passages connecting rooms and facilities.
We had a room on the second floor which entailed hauling heavy cases up a stone staircase.
Almost fell when leaving the hotel.
Lots of heavy oak doors and furniture, very ranch style.
Each room had its own boiler, so lots of hot water.
Rooms were clean and bright.
No slip mat in the bath, my wife slipped and hurt herself.
We had a special dinner, well prepared and tasty, drinks were very reasonable.
Breakfast was varied and adequate.
Staff were friendly.
Was a better house than a hotel.

The hotel is about an hour and a half's drive from both Malaga and Cordoba. It's in a relatively isolated location (but within walking and biking distance to two towns) in the middle of hundreds of square miles of olive groves, on the side of a hill. The views were spectacular, and the staff friendly. My favourite part of our stay were the early evenings spent sitting on the terrace, drinking a glass of wine before dinner. Lovely. This hotel is also very nicely situated for bike touring. It's located directly on the Via Verde Subbettica (not always paved--better for mountain bikes and hybrids) and the roads in the region are beautifully paved, quiet, and ideal for road biking.
The hotel is charming and comfortable but not luxurious (e.g., instead of bar service at the pool there is a self-serve fridge with soft drinks and beer; we also had some problems with our shower). This is not a pro or a con, just a fact. If you want overblown five-star service, look elsewhere. If you are looking for a shady spot to read in a beautiful garden, the Hacienda will suit you right down to the ground.
