“Very scenic but longer than advertised”

Owner description: Rental canoe on the Dordogne River in Perigord, between Vitrac and Beynac.
Reviewed 8 September 2016

We did the Vitrac to Beynac canoe trip and it was very scenic and pleasant. Unfortunately, it took us much longer than the 2.5 hours. We were told that once we passed the first bridge we would have gone half way. We passed it in under 45 minutes but then, it took us another 2.25 hours just to reach the bridge before Beynac, and we did not stop along the way. I wondered if the flow of the river is lower in the later part of August with the higher temperatures the area has experienced in late August? In any event, the trip was very scenic, but be prepared for a longer canoe trip than advertised.

We did route #1 from Vitrac to Beynac, an easy downstream paddle of 15 km (about 10 miles) which leisurely takes about 2-1/2 hours, but longer duration if you make stops along the river bank. Unrushed awesome experience, combining nature and views of chateaus. A small no cost shuttle bus, which runs several times daily, picked up us and other canoers in Beynac about 20 minutes after we reached Beynac by canoe.

3 days later, we rented another canoe in Vitrac. A one-time a day morning only van drove us and the canoes from the Vitrac canoe rental location to St-Julien de Lampon. We paddled route #4 from St-Julien de Lampon to Vitrac an easy downstream paddle of 17 km (about 11-1/2 miles) which leisurely takes about 3 hours, but longer duration if you make stops along the river bank. There is an unavoidable small area of not dangerous fast water where it is semi-important that the person in the bow (front) seat continuously paddles so the front of the canoe does not turn sideways to that current. Route #4 is an unrushed awesome experience, combining nature and views of a few chateaus. We ended our paddle at the canoe rental location in Vitrac.

Be mindful that shuttles, etc., cannot run on a perfect schedule. The roads are narrow, winding, have lots of slow moving tourist cars, and occasional summer roadwork. Be patient. Don't expect to launch nor arrive back on a perfect time schedule.

Use their website's contact form: (1) to make your reservation; and (2) let them know 48 hours in advance that you are still coming. I would avoid using their email address which does not work for us.

Be sure to wear foot ware (required), and bring a hat, sunscreen, and optionally bring a watertight bag for your battery powered electronics and cameras.

This adventure met our needs perfectly. After many self-guided town walks and guided venues, this was a great adventure with nature. The excellent Sarlat-Le-Caneda Tourist Office staff offered to ring the company on our behalf and make a booking which included picking us up on the edge of the medieval centre of town to take us out to Vitrac to start our canoe trip. Excellent briefing on procedure and safety as well as stops along the way set us off with arrangement to pick us up in Beynac and transport us back to Sarlat. Village stops along the way for meals or snacks are explained and easily executed.
The experience is sublime, the views beautiful and the support anxiety free.

Our 10:30 pickup in Beynac was almost 40 minutes late and the seven of us waiting almost gave it up. Glad we had the patience because the experience was extraordinary. The trip from Vitrac took us about 4 hours, including a nice stop for a late lunch in Castelnaud. We saw views of the various chateaux and villages we'd already visited but the perspective from the river made them all look even better.

The explanations on paddling for novices was clear; the canoe easy to manage, the river was a dream to transverse. Even the tiny rapids were not a problem. The villages on the river banks a dream to visit. All in all an entirely fantastic day.
