After the fairly hair-raising (very narrow and winding) road in , it was a pleasant surprise to find how cool it was here. (we had spent almost 3 weeks in other much hotter parts of Costa Rica). At the time we were there it was pretty much guaranteed that you would see a quetzel which had obligingly nested in a tree not too far from the road. There are plenty of other walks to do nearby as well.
Although the rooms are large and have nice gardens and seats outside, they feel more 3 star while the staff and restaurant are definitely 4 star.
It was a bit too resorty for my taste- lots of big tour groups and gilded desserts (!?) but a great spot to see a range of hummingbirds.

This is a very special place. You drive down a winding, steep road into a beautiful, lush valley. The hotel was founded by a man who discovered the valley back in the 1950s. He and his family have improved and expanded the property over the years. Very-eco conscious. Our room was spacious, simple, comfortable. The gardens are extraorindary, and there are plenty of walking trails. We also enjoyed excellent massages at the spa. Birders will love this place; you can sit on the terrace, and watch the hummingbirds come to the feeders. Or you can bird along the trails. We also took a short drive to an area where quetzals were nesting; an extraordinarily beautiful bird. A memory for a lifetime. The restaurant has a good-quality buffet for lunch and dinner. This is a peaceful, magical place. I will never forget it.

We chose San Gerado over Monteverde because we felt it might be quieter. I don't know whether it was but it was certainly worth the trip and very enjoyable. The Savegre Hotel was a nice place to stay with excellent grounds and access to walking trails. The room we had was fine but fairly basic, but being able to walk outside and sit in the surrounding gardens with the birds was of far more importance. The food is fairly basic but perfectly adequate and the bar was also very welcoming. It is worth the steep walk up to the viewing platform and as others have suggested, do visit the toliets there! They are far better than those in most hotels in Costa Rica and the view surpasses any other toilet I have been to! We went on a few bird watching tours and Melvin was a fantastic and friendly guide. He also has his own bird garden which is well worth a visit. It is interesting that standards for hotels seem to be rising in this area and it is worth visiting Lauraceaus Lodge just down the road to see this. (We went for lunch and the trout was fantastic). As a result I expect to see more changes at Savegre. The downside here is that it can be a bit crowded, including the Quetzel spotting, but still worth the trip and we would return.

We had a Junior Suite here, which meant the room was large with an enourmous bathroom. The heater/air-con was very good - it gets really cold at night in the mountains. The grounds are extrensive and there is plenty of walking here and in the area. See ange55's review for more detail. We had quetzal tour pre-booked. Our guide Raul arrived in his open land rover to collect us at 5.15am. It was only a few degrees above freezing which was a shock to the system, and he drive was very refreshing! Raul took us to a stream frequented by quetzals and by 5.30 we were watching them. Fantastic. Sadly at that time of day the photos are not great, but who cares. After we got back with a good appetite for the excellent breakfast Raul emailed us a list of the bird species from the morning trip - we had seen 37 different species. Raul is very knowledgeable amd i would highly recommend him. As ange55 has commented in her review the hotel was quietly closing down due to the Covid 19 virus. They were scrupulous at providing sanitiser by the restaurant and reception (which hosts a very nice shop). There is a happy hour between 3 and 5pm with half price drinks, where you can sit on a veranda overlooking trees frequented by beautiful long tailed silky-flycatchers. One of the guides who has a house on the site has a humming bird garden which you are welcome to visit (or were until the Covid 19) a donation is requested to help towards the cost of upkeep.

Quiet location a few miles from the main road . Smooth check in , given room 131 which was close to a garden , the restaurant & the bar . Rooms - rustic cabins , comfortable beds , can get very cold at night but rooms have an additional heater plus extra blankets in wardrobe , also cold first thing in morning but warms up very quickly in this area . Food was good , buffet style breakfast plus choice of hot food meals . Evening meals exceptionally good & reasonably priced but wine quite expensive . Nice bar with outdoor decking too , nice bar snack meals which were great for lunch . Very much enjoyed trip out Melvin who took us up the mountains to the viewing platform - amazing experience, tip - go by jeep , it’s a long walk , Also visit toilets on the platform - and take your camera in !! Trek through woods up in mountains to see bird life & Quetzal , also saw masses of spider monkeys there too , Melvin is a fabulous guide . A big thanks to all the staff at the lodge who were polite , accommodating & friendly , especially difficult time for them as borders had just been closed due to Covid 19 virus but all acted with such professionalism & dignity at this time to keep guest safe . Beautiful resort in lovely location , lovely walks around , restaurants nearby & a mini mart . I am also reviewing the Savegre waterfalls ( separately ) we decided to walk to view them one day , all I can say here is DONT , the final half mile to get to the falls is extremely dangerous , bridges ( including suspension ) are broken with missing hand rails , holes where you are supposed to walk over grills above water , lack / missing ropes , a lot of the route is overgrown & very slippery , it is lethal & visitors should be warned against visiting ( especially is you are supervising children too ) the authorities need to close route & repair . Anyway enjoy your time at hotel & viewing the amazing Quetzals .
