We checked in then checked out. Room we were shown was so small suitcase could only be opened on bed. The room and hallway smelled strongly of smoke and cleaning supplies. Based on the price we were quoted this was no bargain. We have stayed in "charming" Japanese hotels and ryokan and unfortunately this is not one. Perhaps the Japanese style rooms are better as others have suggested, but the price was the same as Hilton and with the impending typhoon during our visit, we chose to stay in a more reliable location.

Great location, near Ueno Park & Ueno Zoo, but a bit pricey for the size of the room.

This is a great hotel when you're looking for a traditional japanese room/experience. Don't forget to try the Onsen! :)

We stay here for 3 nights. We had a Japanese style room which was very spacious for Tokyo and the bathroom was bigger than usual. Ueno Park and Zoo are a short walk away. We used Nezu station as our local stop on the metro. It's only 5 minutes walk behind the hotel and is a cool neighbourhood for dining and shopping. The hotel has a very nice courtyard garden and although we didn't have meals there the restaurant looked very upmarket. The only downside was the "laundry" which was just a washing machine & dryer hidden behind a door in the basement. Internet available at cost in the foyer. Staff were helpful but English was limited so some basic Japanese would come in handy.

This hotel is in an excellent location for seeing parts of Tokyo that are not on every tour. We've stayed here at least five times over the past thirty years. It wasn't until our third stay that we discovered the charming neighborhoods behind the hotel (away from the train station and park) where it is quiet and you can get a glimpse of how Japanese really live.
That said, we have always enjoyed the park, especially on our first (honeymoon) visit when the cherry blossoms seemed to bloom just for us. And having the train station area close by, with its warren of alleyways full of shops and bars meant that if we wanted to see fast-paced, neon-lights Tokyo, it was only a short walk through the park.
We have always stayed in Tatami rooms, except once when only a western room was available. Much prefer the tatami room because the simplicity and lack of sophistication that is charming in the Japanese setting is just claustrophobic and depressing in the western setting.
The front desk staff is helpful but very reserved, with varying degrees of English fluency, but we've never had major communication issues.
We have a sentimental soft spot for Suigetsu, but even without the romantic connection, it would be our go-to spot in Tokyo because it is convenient, clean, comfortable, and utterly charming.

Room Tip: Be sure to get a tatami room!

This hotel is right next to Ueno Park, which is convenient if you want to see the zoo or museums (and the park itself is nice too). Otherwise it's a 30 haul on the (nice, clean) subway/local train to Ginza or Shibuya. We initially booked a western-style room, which turned out to be a really claustrophobic cell, so we upgraded to a Japanese-style room which was easily twice the size and looked onto the nice interior garden. It also had a nice large (for Tokyo) bathroom. The hotel was quite busy, with large groups using the banquet rooms on the lower floors every evening. That said, it was very quiet at night. The restaurant with the daily breakfast was nice enough. The Japanese breakfast was typical, the coffee was quite good too. For some reason they insist on playing CDs of very annoying music-box music, both in the lobby and restaurant. The staff was very helpful and nice, which one comes to expect in Japan. They also had a free laundry machine (with detergent!) in the bowels of the building, which was a very nice convenience. No wifi though, either in the rooms or even in the lobby. Overall I'd say the hotel was...meh. But unless you are really on a budget do avoid the Western rooms.
