Perched up on a hill over looking sea - this standard hotel has a great location in that you great views of the sea, whilst in a short distance to the beautiful port of Sauzon. The hotel itself was very clean, all the facilities required, excellent pool and hot-tub (overlooking sea) and the restaurant had fantastic buffet dinner - it was not a luxury stay, but with friendly and helpful staff it was a very enjoyable stay and good value for money

Room Tip: Rooms away from pool and restaurant, facing south, were quieter -

The service throughout our stay was superb. The view from our room's terrace was beautiful and serene. I would definitely spend the extra and reserve a room with a terrace. Breakfast is included and good. It also comes with wonderful view. The hiking trail is very close and the port is a 5 minute walk. The pool and hot tub was perfect for after a hike. Once again, a beautiful view while you relax by the pool.

Belle Ile is a stunning destination, and Le Cardinal proved an inspired choice of hotel. First for the view: the hotel sits on a point above the port of Sauzon and is sited to look straight down the jagged coastline of tiny bays with black rocks sheering out of the water beneath emerald green bush. We saw this magnificent outlook in many guises from our bedroom, the restaurant and the hotel's public spaces. Second the hotel's food is lovely. Breakfast was the standard smorgasbord of cheese, meats and breads, but also offered striking enhancements: a dozen variety of eggs and crepes cooked to order (I enjoyed crepes with unsalted ham and a sharp cheese), beautiful fresh watermelon and orange juice, espresso coffee and bowls of fresh fruit salad. There is also a "famous seafood buffet" (32 Euro) which justified its reputation. A piquant prawn bisque segued into sweet local oysters, three types of prawns and other assorted shellfish including lovely bulots (sea snails) with firm chewy texture and nice taste. The hot main was a seafood brochette, followed by several cheeses and desserts including eclair and mousse. Plus wine included, of course. Location of the hotel is great, too, with its own bus stop from which to explore the island, and just a few minutes walk to Sauzon's lively waterfront cafés and bars. Finally the staff are friendly and helpful, with a local's pride in their home.

This hotel has one very strong playing card: its stunning location on a hill overlooking the charming port of Sauzon and a lovely pool from where to contemplate those views. It’s missing, though, that island charm that other hotels offer in spade loads on Belle Ile, and the standard rooms are ridiculously priced for what they offer. Here’s the good and the bad...

Pros: amazing position, just a five-minute stroll to the port, where sailing boats are constantly drifting in and out, and to lots of lovely restaurants (like La Phare). Heated pool and large terrace. The restaurant... where each evening Le Cardinal rolls out an amazing seafood buffet, open to guests (29 euros, including wine) and locals (32). And the latter is what saved this hotel, at the last moment, from ending up with a 3: such a pleasure looking out at the ocean, surrounded by dozens of happy families and couples savouring every morsel of their platters of crab, prawns, oysters, smoked salmon... salads, cheeses and puddings galore (top tip: take a walk before bed!)

Cons: our standard room looked dated and a little tired, without a single personal touch. As for the bathrooms, any French chain hotel could do better: tiny cramped showers and a few thin towels.
Staff: fantastic in the evening restaurant, charming and hands-on, but their colleagues on reception, while efficient and polite, lacked the friendly approach we found elsewhere on the island.

Conclusion: stay here if you really want a pool and views and see if you can get a good deal on those room, or wait until they do them up. Or just come for dinner.
If you are happy to be inland, La Desirade remains the best hotel on the island, for us, because of its charm and personal touches.

Room Tip: Wait for them to reduce price on standard rooms or freshen them up
