The Old Barracks is a very popular restaurant in Athenry. I dined at lunch time and was lucky to get a table. The restaurant does have outdoor seating and in good weather makes for a pleasant alternative to eating indoors. There are a limited no of car parking spaces at the back of the restaurant.

The Menu is varied and offers salads and open sandwiches and full lunch Daily specials are listed on the Chalk Board outside the establishment. Do be aware that if special events are on in the town for example the 1916 Farm Event or the Bia Festival the restaurant offers a set Lunch Menu only.

When I dined I opted for an open sandwich on homemade brown bread. This was very tasty, nice home cooked ham and tomato with a side of coleslaw This dish is served on a wooden board so if this does not appeal to you - just request a plate. . Many sandwich topping options are available. A pot of Herbal tea too was enjoyable. The Teas are served in very colourful pots. My lunch cost 7 Euro 30 cent.

Well worth a visit. Dining in the evening is also an option.

This will be quite a short review, as I didn't get to experience the meal portion of this establishment. Basically I was waiting for the train to take me back to Galway. So, I decided to have a coffee on quiet Sunday. The cafe was quite bustling, as a lot of locals were out and about. I ordered a mocha, that was absolutely perfect, as it wasn't overly sweet. It was the perfect balance me.The service??? C'mon, were talking Ireland here. So basically that warm, friendly atmosphere that's very indicative of most of the country. So yes, I would highly recommend this establishment.

Absolutely lovely in every way!
The Old Barracks has the prettiest shop front in totown partly due to all the window boxes, hanging planters and vases of flowers around and in the building and the rest due to the old stone walls and brightly painted shutters and trim! When I think of an Irish café/bistro, this is what I picture! Beautiful and homey all at once :) the coffee (Americano) is perfect and the scones delicious! And if Harvey is there to make you a fabulous mocha, then your trip will be well worth it! Family owned and run and very welcoming! A must try for anyone in driving distance of Athenry! Cheers!
