The location is amazing if you have your own car (otherwise very isolated). The views are stunning - out to Rangitoto, over Auckland City, over the Waitakere's.
We attended a wedding (great setting) and the catering was delicious. Service was great and prompt. Breakfast was delicious, with lot's of choice.

The rating reflects the fact that we got no sleep till after 2.30am because the staff cleared the room up and then set up for another wedding the next day until 2am. Our bedroom was underneath!!! If you are planning to stay the night, I would check if there is an event on during your stay. The noise travels through the building and I am sure we were not the only guests to have experienced being kept awake.
Our room was also next to the laundry which was noisy during the day from the machines and the staff. I would recommend asking for a room on the top floor, away from the dining and function rooms.
All staff were friendly apart from one member who was very rude at 2am when we asked if they could stop making a noise. We did complain in the morning, and did receive a discount, but it was still an expensive room at the discounted price.
The room was large, the shower was great, bed comfy but there was a mouldy smell which was unpleasant and not expected given the price bracket.

Room Tip: Top floor, away from dining room and function rooms, as you may be kept awake from staff clearing up...

Depending on the reasons for your stay, this hotel could be heaven or it could be hell. Located in the Waitakere Regional Park outside of Auckland, the isolated property has a mountain viewpoint over the city of Auckland. According to the hotel's management, the hotel was built in the 70's with the 2 room bungalow annex and squash court the first buildings. The main hotel followed. No significant renovations have upgraded the infrastructure or amenities. East facing rooms in the main hotel have views of the well cared for unheated outdoor pool and manicured lawn area. There is a series of walking trails with steep portions descending the mountain.

Our expections from reading the hotel's description on their website were, unfortunately not met. The suite we stayed in was one of two in the original duplex structure. The exterior and interior of this building were so dated and the light wood paneling so reminiscent of a log cabin that we jokingly referred to our rooms as "summer camp, youth hostel chic". The carpet at the entrance was stained and the one bed lamp needed a new bulb. The outer room has a single bed, sofa and chairs and a dining area/ full kitchen with dishes and pots, pans. The wrap around windows were a major source of warming during the day, and the two rooms continued uncomfortably warm throughout the night. The bathroom did have a whirlpool tub which we did not use. The rooms in the main hotel are more traditionally furnished, some with double French doors. They are also small and not air conditioned.

During the night the opened windows admitted various flying insects, which were attracted by a floodlight just outside the window over our bed. The sound of the moths (beautiful bright green) hitting the corrugated tin roof along with the bright light shining into the room made it difficult to sleep. We found the mattress hard. There was an ancient, discolored and cracked hair dryer in the bathroom.

We had breakfast in the pleasant dining room of the main hotel two mornings. The large breakfast fee was not included in our room price. The staff is small and the same woman presided over the dining area both days. We found her cold but efficient.

There is a very large gathering room with a fireplace that is quite nicely furnished. It must be congenial during cold weather but stuffy and hot during warm weather.

The staff ranged from very friendly (our housekeeping lady, a front end manager) to rude (a desk clerk who hung up when I asked for someone to turn off the floodlight outside our bedroom window)

We will not return to this hotel and have come to the conclusion that the Waitekere Estate, Heritage Boutique collection hotel capitalizes on its location to appeal to Auckland penshioners and events planners but lacks amenities that most other visitors want. Guests visiting from other countries will find the prices for rooms lacking air conditioning and needing renovation inflated. Wifi is limited. The delightful views of Auckland were negated by outdated/ uncomfortable facilities, distance from shopping, absense of transportation and sometimes less than helpful staff.

Thnak you for your review, we regret you were not satisfied with some aspects of your stay. At Heritage Collection Waitakere Estate all rooms and restaurant/lounge areas have been extensively refurbished over the last few years in a colonial style fitting with the overall Hotel's character. The only Building which has not been refurbished, which incorporates the Squash Court and other amenities, is undergoing a major redevelopment over the next few months providing the Hotel with an exciting new range of facilities.

We are pleased you enjoyed the magnificent views and setting of the Hotel.

We regularly stay in Auckland but due to lack of availability we had to spread our search outwards and found this place. We arrived in the dark in the middle of a storm so we certainly knew that we were in rain forest.

Check-in was quick and friendly and our room (no. 3) was just off reception. The room was large, clean and well decorated in keeping with the age and styling of the facility (1970's?).

Seeing as we were in the middle of a storm we didn't really want to go back out to eat, especially as the very long driveway was resembling a river, so we were pleased to find the restaurant open. What a gem. We had some of the best food that we've had in a long time. My wife is coeliac so must eat gluten free, which often equates to a boring salad or fritata. Not here as she had the most amazing goats cheese cake, followed by a vegetable stack and finished with a German cream desert (sorry, can't remember the name).

We were checked out by Vicki (the 11am checkout time was appreciated), who couldn't be more helpful. We asked about Christmas and she found and printed the menu from last Christmas. She also very openly told us that they had some issues last Christmas but steps had been taken to ensure that there would be no repeat. We certainly liked her honesty.

We will definitely be returning.

Wonderful service, excellent room, awesome views. We will be back. The decor is quaint, arriving along the long driveway, then around the building is an attraction in it's own right. Staff were wonderful. Breakfast simple but very good.

Room Tip: Room 1 is the best- two windows- one a view into the city, the other into the bush
