A recent two night break in Carlow, perhaps one of the lesser visited counties, revealed a hidden gem which left us all very satisfied with our decision to go there. A group comprising of two couples, we like to visit "out of the way places" and make our own discoveries. Yes, it has its dangers but when you you find a place like the Step House Hotel it is such a joy. We booked a two night B/B with one dinner midweek break.
It is a cosy hotel with an inviting open real fire near reception which sets the tone for your stay. Generous sized rooms are complimented with separate shower and bath options. Coffee/tea makers and large flat screen TV complete the facilities. We ate in the bar on the Thursday night as the cellar restaurant was closed and the food was excellent. Breakfast each morning was served in the beautifully appointed Cellar restaurant and comprised of both cold buffet and table served hot options. Perfect !
Lastly but by no means least as a value for money choice, it was very reasonable and well below what you would expect. The only quibble is that having reserved a table with the bar staff early in the evening, when we arrived to take our seat they had reassigned us to a table next to the fire. Supposed benefits(excuses) of being warmer did not really carry with us. Borris is not really on the way to anywhere special but the Step House was well worth the visit.

Room tip: Rear rooms may be a little quieter for light sleepers

Just returned from an overnight stay at the Step House Hotel
The room was lovely with comfortable bed, walk in shower and large balcony.
We had a meal in the restaurant and it was delicious, followed by a freshly cooked breakfast the next morning.
The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful, in particular Samantha.
I would highly recommend a visit to the Step House Hotel.
You will not be disappointed.

Close by & convenient in a lovely village atmosphere with the outstanding viaduct below. The lunch menu wasn’t huge but covered the usual soup, open sandwiches & salad. Unfortunately in the bar we weren’t able to order a hot meal as it didn’t start till 3pm & we were informed the chef wasn’t available. However we weren’t disappointed by any means the ordering of open sandwiches, both smoked salmon & ham & cheese were delicious & the servings were very generous. A bowl of fresh cut breadstick was moreish to start off. A glass of wine completed the lunch very nicely. Would recommend followed by a walk around the nearby laneways, especially in summer when the gardens are blooming.

Room tip: Preferably away from the ball room on lower ground floor, as it can be very noisy if a wedding is being held there.

I can not recommend the step house enough from the fabulous gardens where the ceremony took place to the restaurant quality food served was perfectly presented. The staff were fantastic and very helpful and courteous. The piece de resistance was the next morning as a non resident my husband was looking for breakfast and even though service was over the owner appeared with a bacon sandwich, not a word said or made to feel under a compliment. It’s the small gestures and that attention to detail make the Step House Hotel worth the visit every time.

I booked the restaurant but accessibility was an issue as it has no parking so we went to the bar. The lunch was the same, reasonably priced €22 . I had soup for starter which was like curry sauce as were the carrots in the main course. Rive Gauche much better restaurant.
