My wife and I stayed at the Almijara Hotel for one week (17th - 24th October). We were influenced on our choice of hotel by the comments on trip advisor. The trip advisor comments regarding standards of cleanliness, convenience to bus stop, location, value for money fast wifi and friendliness of staff all lived up to expectation. Prior to travelling to Spain we emailed the hotel and requested a room on the 4th floor. As we were arriving late at night we wished to ensure that we would have input to the allocated room. Our request was actioned and we were allocated a room on the 4th floor with a balcony which had a view of the beach and mountains. There is a rooftop sun terrace on the 5th Floor which gives a panoramic view of the area.
Breakfast choice of hot items is a little limited but we were able to get by. The coffee is excellent. Apart from breakfast we ate out locally. There are a large number of local restaurants offering a wide variety of culinary choices.. Tapas was freely available in all bars. The hotel does not have a swimming pool but the beach is 100 metres away. The beach is clean and uncrowded but is volcanic sand and shingle.
La Herradura was a picturesque fishing village which has expanded but would not be considered “touristy” Use of Spanish phrases is appreciated by the locals. There is a tourist information centre in the the town close to the beach. The centre staff speak English and are very helpful.
To watch English Premier League football make your way to El Salon bar which is about 20 yards from the hotel. A warm welcome is guaranteed from Antonio and the staff as well as the best tapas in La Herradura.
We used local bus transport to visit Nerja, Almunecar, and Granada. The bus to Granada is less than 14 euros return and passes close to the spectacular Sierra Nevada Mountains on its way to Granada. With its Islamic history, Granada old city area has a mix of Spanish and Arabic cultures and the Alhambra Castle and fortress in the old city is spectacular.
All in all the Almijura Hotel La Herradura is an ideal location to experience local Spanish hospitality and visit a scenic area of Spain.

Room Tip: 4th Floor with mountain and sea view

Reception staff are the only thing I have positive to say. Food not even luke warm. (Says something when there is a microwave to use)
Definately would advise if you like things to be modern and definately not 4star

This is the second time we have stayed here and it was as good as we remembered. The room is well equipped and breakfast was on the roof terrace - a real bonus as last time we were in the dining room. A notice in the lift said that from the following day meals would no longer be served on the terrace, so we were lucky. A great start to our holiday. We were not able to have a space in the garage, but there was (free) parking nearby.

We booked the Almijara on the basis we had a parking space with the hotel. However on arrival there was no space for our car. Firstly one cannot even stop outside the front of the hotel as its one way, narrow and bollards on the pavement, so we pulled into a nearby cul de sac to off load. Blocked in then by a delivery van! The receptionist was not very apologetic about the parking issue ( evidently there are only a few spaces and its first come first served whether you've booked or not) she assured me I could park on the sea front. After the delivery driver let me out I drove around the one way system to the sea front which for the whole length was full. Eventually I found a space in the town. 15 mins walk back to the hotel I was informed that where Id parked was short stay only! So I returned to car and drove around until at last a space became vacant on the sea front. All this took over an hour!! The room was ok although the view was of a wall. The breakfast however was excellent.

Room Tip: Ask to see first, as above ours had no view whatsoever.

La Herradura is a pleasant seaside town on on Eastern Costa del Sol.
It has a stony beach which means it is not totally overrun with visitors in Summer.
Vast majority of tourists are Spanish.
Hotel Almijara is ideally situated in town centre, near beach.
Breakfast on roof terrace under blue sky is a must.
Parking in town is a major problem, the hotel has very limited private parking.
