“Amazing Restaurant”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 March 2012

I was treated to the taster menu to celebrate my retirement. It was the finest meal I have had. Yes it was expensive but worth every penny. The service was stunning, the food amazing and most importantly some incredible memories to treasure. I shall certainly dine here again.

Ok it's not the least expensive place to eat in the area - but why should it be? It's most definately the best - and you get what you pay for.
I simply cannot fault the food, service and relaxed surroundings. Always my family's choice for an occasion. Can't recommend more highly.

Found this place via internet offer for discounted rooms. Stayed for two nights. Wonderful break: luxury surroundings, great food and very helpful staff who were keen to make our stay perfect. Such a change to find staff who know what service is. A note on the food: excellently cooked, and a fantastic choice of wines. The hotel was on the edge of the Bolton Abbey estate so we walked in the grounds to the Abbey and followed the river. Then back to the hotel and before dinner, a dip in the spa. We couldn't book a massage or other spa treatment, because we had left it late: ie the day before. Best to book these when you book into the hotel. We'll do that next time.

Room Tip: Basic rooms are good enough, though they have some special rooms.

We had a one night stay at the Devonshire Arms, arriving Saturday just gone. We were with another couple who were great company and we had a wonderful time. Being with another lively couple qualifies ones impressions of the place visited. We were as far removed from hotel inspectors as could be. I have also decided henceforth, not to read other reviews before composing my own. It is easy to be influenced! Nevertheless, here goes....

The space is more like a country home than a hotel. There are several nooks and crannies where you can have a quiet sit/chat. We spent Sat afternoon on settees in front of a real fire chatting. Ideal. The room we were in was tired but perfectly did the job (refurbs are on-going to rooms in the old part of the building). Furniture is old-fashioned. Bathroom fine but again not hi-tech. Shower over bath very good altho' even at max setting, the water could have been hotter. The bed was firm enough for a bad-back sufferer and we had a good night's sleep.

The staff are and service was top-notch, quietly knowledgeable and efficient. The somellier is (surprisingly) Cumbrian. He was understated and did not (as in other aspirational establishments) quietly disparage my choices of wine or become huffy at not being left to choose the wine.

We plumped for the Prestige tasting menu - we counted 11 courses but it is easy to lose count. The food was very, very good. Half-way thru we were not sure we were going to make it to the end but we soldiered on with lovely dishes following one another at a nice pace.

There are wine cellars on show (secure glass-walled rooms) with cases of Petrus (3 magnums on show) Ch Margaux etc etc. The wine list is phenomenal.

The surrounding area is perfect for walking. More than one guest had a dog staying. This is a no-win issue. I am a little asthmatic and react to dogs/cats. I would therefore normally avoid hotels that welcome pets. Not a problem on this trip for me but it would make me hesitate to return to stay.

Overall, a lovely country house hotel with wonderful food and service and great wines to choose from. I would return for a special meal but would hesitate about staying. It is of course not cheap, and the accommodation does not match the exclellent quality of the rest of the package.

Room Tip: The new wing has more modern rooms

Another last minute reservation after eating there on several occasions, I checked into room 25 on the ground floor. The room wasn’t big but had great views over the countryside and gardens, was well equipped with lovely traditional furniture, TV and DVD player and an extremely comfortable bed (although the bed linen had been tucked in so tight at the bottom it felt like a straight-jacket!).
The bathroom was small but modern and of good standard with a bath and overhead shower and Temple Spa products.

The room was reduced from over £200 per night for single occupancy to just over £120 if I ate at the hotel so not cheap.

I ate in the bistro where the food is always consistently good and so was the service.

The hotel really is a beautiful place with stunning views over the Yorkshire countryside and good facilities, lots of open fires, wellington boots and walking sticks by the door and a warm, friendly welcome. The only thing they couldn’t supply me with was a Blackberry charger but the gentleman on reception was very helpful going through lots of other types of phone chargers!

If you are looking for a special place to stay, a romantic retreat or a spa themed break then I would highly recommend the Devonshire Arms. A walk around Bolton Abbey is also a must.
