My husband and I had the utmost pleasure of having lunch at Antiek Sjiek in Hendrina on Friday, 24 June 2016. The entrance to the restaurant is just off the main road. The whole area boasts nostalgic and very interesting décor throughout that adds to the charming and inviting ambience. We chose a table on the veranda and were transformed into a familiar bygone era.
The menu boasts breakfasts, homemade pies, salads, pancakes (sweet and savoury) and beef curry to name a few. The menu is very reasonably priced in comparison to the high quality of our meals.
My husband had the beef curry which was served in a black three legged pot. This was accompanied by a fresh and very tasty side salad and sliced banana with a heavenly sauce (on the side). He thoroughly enjoyed each and every bite. I had a taste of his curry and it was melt in the mouth tender and perfectly spiced.
I had the “Jafle” (Jaffel) which is a true South African dish. It consisted of two slices of bread filled with a heavenly mixture of mince, tomato and cheese which is then toasted in a “jafle” pan. I thoroughly enjoyed every scrumptious bite.
The service from our waitress was very friendly, hands on and unobstrusive.
The antique store is a whole delightful experience in itself and boasts a wide variety on display. The house adjacent to the tea garden is filled with treasures from a bygone era displayed in each room. Beautiful cutlery and crockery is displayed in the dining room and some of the pieces are for sale.
The restrooms are sparkling clean and neat. The décor in the restroom of the main house is very unique and interesting and well worth a look (coins laden into the floor).
We utterly enjoyed our mouthwatering lunch in a very relaxing ambience and will most definitely go back on our next trip through Hendrina to sample on the menu and enjoy the magical ambience.
