We were invited to a party near St Jean d'Angely, but its over three hours from our home. L'Etoile du Port was perfect for us, and our dog. We settled in before the party, then came back later in the evening. Lots of places to exercise the dog as well, although rivers and spaniels don't really mix. Nice bedroom. Very warm welcome and a very nice breakfast, what's not to like?

My husband and I stayed at L'Etoile du Port for a couple of nights whilst visiting for a friends wedding and we were delighted.

Claire could not have been more accommodating. I received an email on Friday morning (the day of our arrival) to welcome us and on the booking it mentioned that check in was between 4:30-7:30. This posed a problem as we were meant to be at a pool party between 4-8 so I have Claire a call and without hesitation she offered for us to check in at 3.

And this flexibility and hospitality remained for the rest of our stay. She could not have been more accommodating and was even thoughtful enough to give us frozen water bottles to take with us on our final day for the long drive in the heat! Thank you Claire.

As for the hotel it is lovely. It only has 4 rooms so it is really personal. There is also a large communal lounge which we relaxed in on our first night and shared our travel stories with fellow guests. There is a guest kitchen fully equipped with cold water (heaven!!) as well as coffee, tea etc.

The room itself was spacious. Unfortunately on our first night it was over 30 degrees outside (during the night too!!) so we didn't sleep too well as there is no air con however the temperature was much more pleasant on our second night and we slept like logs.

Good powerful shower with the option of a normal head or one of those rainforest heads (lush!).

And then breakfast was divine. Once again Claire went completely out of her way to make sure we had everything we wanted.

Would highly recommend it and would definitely come back again.

Spent just one night here while driving back to Portugal from the UK. The position of the house is lovely right next to the river and was bathed in sunshine when we arrived. The property is very well converted and provides four rooms/suites. Our room overlooked the river and was perfect. Very comfortable bed with quality linen. Plenty of room and spotlessly clean. There is a huge communal area for relaxing and breakfast. There is also a kitchen available for guests. Lots of free safe parking at the front. Clare couldn't have been more helpful. We will definitely be back.

Once a reputation for excellence has been established it would be all too easy to sigh with self-satisfaction and cruise along at a slightly less perfect pace. I am pleased to report that this is far from the case at the delightful Etoile du Port. The setting is as perfect as others have described, the rooms are spotless and the decor faultless. Clare is a charming host, who goes out of her way to make sure that all her guests receive her full attention. We continue to book "our" room three times a year - which speaks volumes for the welcome, the comfort and the breakfasts. A bientot!

Great service from start to finish. Very welcoming and accommodating. Lovely Clare even sais iur dogs were the best behaved she'd had (maybe she says that to all the dogs!) Easy to find from the motorway but quiet and within walking distance of the charming quiet town. Sorry we couldn't stay an extra day! Next time.

Room Tip: Rooms overlook the water complete with ducks etc. Idyllic.
