An ideal location for a break during your trip from Nairobi to the coast (ore vice versa). Just branch off in Maungu (near Voi) and drive 10 km into the bush. Rock Side Camp (former Westermann's Safari Camp) is nestled at the foot of Kale Hill, an impressive rock which you can (and should!) climb for the scenic views from up there. Enjoy the endless panorama of the Sagala Plains with the backdrop of the Taita Hills. The tiny old bandas are no longer in use, big and airy ones have replaced them. The pool is clean, the kitchen is good, the staff is welcoming, the value ist very much ok. No entrance fees will bother you, but the gates for the Tsavos Parks are in close reach. If you do not need a full safari, some hyrax, impalas, bush babies and genet cats give you a bit of wildlife feeling even on the spot. So maybe in the end you decide to stay longer than just for a stopover...

Nana and Mark were wonderful hosts. We were made to feel at home right away. Accommodation is in chalets that are well constructed and maintained. The view over the plains from the camp nestled below a large granite kopje is amazing.
Food and service is excellent. The entire camp is neat as a pin.

A hidden gem in the wilderness, away from the modern & fast moving world.
Service & hospitality are key values here.
Climbing the "Rock" is a must! great views and good excercise :-)
What an experience to take a swim and watch the elephants approach up to 20 meters.

I am a hotelier and rarely get a break but I found Rock Side through Tripadvisor it was listed with a pool and good reviews. I was not disappointed in any way. Perfect peace and quiet, nice chalets, hot showers, cold beer and excellent food, the organisation and staff were perfect. The back drop of the Rock and the view over the Tsavo plains to the sunset is beautiful. A great location for Tsavo Game Drives or a nice stop over between Nairobi and the coast.

Whilst on our way to Mombasa we spent one night at the very friendly Rock Side Camp. The location is superb, with great views over the plains of Tsavo and a waterhole near the pool so you can have a close look at wildlife while floating about. Service is splendid and the food is very nice as well. We stayed on Christmas eve and were delighted they took some effort to bring in the Christmas atmosphere with a nice tree, decorations and dinner.

For activities you can do a walk or climb the eponymous rock directly behind the camp. It's pretty easy to get up there and the view you get as a reward magnificent.

Rock Side Camp is just 10 kilometres from the Nairobi - Mombasa Road, with a clearly marked sign post in Maungu. You then just drive straight up to the camp, which lies in a private conservancy (but there are no entrance fees).

Highly recommend if you look for a great place to stop on your way to Nairobi or Mombasa, or as an alternative to any of the other safari lodges (of which around Tsavo we didn't sample any, so I am not sure how they compare). The rate is full-board, which is good value for money since the accommodation and food are great.

The staff is well groomed and very friendly, for client service this place definitely ranks in my top 5 for East Africa.

Just one negative comment: the (non-included) drinks are a bit on the pricey side.

Room Tip: We stayed in one of the new stone cottages which are excellent. They have a private veranda with a view, and excellent beds and bathroom. The wooden cabins look a bit dated and dark, so you might want spend some extra on a stone cottage, which is well worth it.
