“Easy visit from Osaka”

Ibaraki Kasugaoka Church
Ranked #1 of 104 things to do in Ibaraki
Attraction details

The Church of the Light is a good opportunity to see one of Tadao Ando’s most famous projects in relatively close proximity to Osaka. Make sure to check the Church’s website on the days/times available to visit. To get to the Church, we took the train to Ibaraki station, which was only about a 15 minute ride from Osaka station. After we got to Ibaraki, I realized that I had forgotten to research and save the directions on how to get to the Church from the train station. Having no wifi, I had to rely on the train ticket agent (some English ability) and the bus driver (no English ability) to figure out what bus to take. Here’s what to do: outside the train station there are maybe 4 or 5 bus stalls…take the #2 bus which will loop out to the Church and back to the station. The bus driver had a handy little piece of paper showing when to exit the bus (Kasugaoka-koen stop) and with walking directions to the Church. It was about a 10 minute ride on the bus from the station to the stop, and then only a minute walk to the Church. You catch the same bus at the same stop to go back to the train station.

You need to book a reservation via their website to be able to go in, and they only have specific days per month that guests are allowed to visit, posted two months prior.

Access to the Church is straightforward. Get off at JR Ibaraki Station and get on the bus to Kasugaokakoen, which is the last stop.

Went here as part of a Tadao Ando pilgrimage I did in Kansai area, and it was the highlight of my day (pun absolutely intended!)

Visited on a Sunday afternoon and really liked this place and the architecture - very peaceful.
Make sure to call them and ask for the times you can enter the church - that's where you see the real magic and how the light plays!
Was here for about 2 hours I guess, but I wanted to stay longer!

In the vicinity, 1,5 km from, of the Osaka Expo 1972 location is an interesting concrete church by Tadao Ando. From outside, only on Sunday's you can visit it inside, you can see the play with light that makes this place a three stars location.
