Miyajima is hours away from central Hiroshima. You also need to take a ferry to the island. A so call traditional Japanese shopping street is near by. This street is full of restaurants serving oyster and eel in many different ways. Other than that there are also many shops selling souvenir. The end of the street is the coast where you will see the 'floating shrine'. If you have check the tide table you would be able to see the Otorii when it's submerged in water and when you can walk under it. There are many coins beneath the Otorii. It is also worth getting into the Itsukushima Shrine to appreciate the historic building. Next to the shrine is the Daiganji (temple). The most recommended place in the island would be the Toyokuni shrine (thousand mataka) right next to the Gojūnotō (5-storied pagoda). The entrance fee is only 100 yen while you can see loads of historic wooden art works/paintings donated by various local societies.
Had to see this shrine in the water. It looks as though it is floating in some lights. Also saw it when tide was out which was interesting as people walked out to it. The area, which was reached by a boat has many deer wandering around, after food from the tourists. Also many shops with souvenirs etc. Could be lovely, but I felt it was too commercial. Loads of people. Nice walk, although steepish in places, also has some steps, to the cable car, which again is well worth the effort. Views from summit absolutely lovely.
Miyajima is a great day trip from Hiroshima. It can even be done easily in half a day depending on what all you find to do on the island. Definitely stop and see the famous Istukushima Shrine, but don't miss out on some other highlights as well! Make sure to try the famous fried momiji manju. It's delicious, cheap, and is offered by many roadside vendors. This island is a great peaceful getaway for those looking for some mental and emotional relief after the heart-wrenching museums and monuments. In spring and summer, be sure to wear hiking shoes and enjoy the beautiful scenery as you hike up the mountain.
Breathtakingly beautiful. Arrive early in the day to avoid the large tour groups. There is the main Itsukushima Shrine the famous Torii in the water and the vermillion pagola. Picture postcard scenery. Worth researching the history before you go, because unless you join a tour group there is no written information in English.
Wasn't planning on visiting our day was planned to spend in Hiroshima but after a few emotional hours revisiting history needed some relief. Caught fast ferry boat out to island just down from A bomb site on river lovely 45 minute boat ride approx $35 AUD each return. First thing as we walk onto the island was the cute wild deer running everywhere (obviously this was before we got to Nara) we visited the shrine and then was unsure what to do, didn't want to just walk around tourist area. So we walked up to chairlift and went up as high as we could, wow what stunning views of the Seto inland sea, definately worth the $20 each. Lovely afternoon seeing a distinct and different area of Japan! So glad we went!
