Stayed in Hotel Bystrina in August 2017 for 5 nights. This was our second time staying there, the first time was two years ago. The hotel and all the services were even better than the first time. We observed that the quality of service, a long-term pain of tourism industry in Slovakia, has improved considerably.
The hotel and the room were clean, fresh, quiet, no problems whatsoever. The reception as well as a very small bar are located in another building, not too far away, which makes the hotel a quiet building. There is a small reception directly in the hotel, but it's only open on certain days, when more guests are expected in the wellness center (I guess). This was no problem at all. Dialing the main reception on the room phone worked reliably every time (they picked up fast), and the receptionists dealt with our requests to our satisfaction.
The two receptionists with whom we interacted were pleasant, attentive and spoke fluent English.
The main restaurant - Koliba - is situated about 1 minute walk from the hotel. It was a delight. Fast service, a good variety of meals - from spicy to sweet - and very reasonable prices (6 - 10 Euro for a meal, few meals above 10 Euro). Enough staff. The waiters have ipads and collect the orders on them. We were literally ordering the meals, and another waitress was already bringing us drinks that we just mentioned to the waiter... Fast, but not rushed. Good sized portions and tasty! Easy to put on a few extra pounds, especially with the helping of beers on tap. There's also a decent wine list, including sparkling wines and a selection of better Slovak and Czech wines. (Slovak wines have improved a lot too). If you feel like it, there is a small bar area at the main reception, with a selection of spirits, bottled beers and chilled wine bottles (or by the glass).
Having researched other hotels in Demanovska valley, I believe this hotel is the best deal around. Check out their Family Package or any other packages on offer, pricing for kids is very favorable. There is an amusement/adventure park/skiing hill in a nearby village (about 2 km) with bobsleigh track, trampolines etc. There is a hike route starting right behind the hotel (quite a steep one). Drive 10 km down the valley road, and you're in the hiking/skiing paradise!
We didn't try the wellness.
Perhaps they could put a bit more art work in the rooms. And this spoiled customer would ask for air conditioning. It was hot when we were there, but bearable.
