“Sadly No Longer Open to the Public”

Seal Point Lighthouse
Reviewed 6 April 2018

This is a piece of South African History. Commissioned in 1878 and still working today. It is the most South Easterly lighthouse on the South African coast, situated in pristine fynbos and wild scenery and close to a spectacular beach.

Such a pity that it no longer supports tourist visits. I think St Francis Bay Tourist Authority has lost an opportunity to promote that beautiful haven with so much history.

I would have rated it higher but for my inability to visit and explore this "beacon" of history.

The lighthouse is situated on the point of the southern easterly tip of Africa. The historic site allows one to walk around. There is on the grounds a rehabilitation center for the penguins. A good outing.

We spent such a special misty afternoon here with the foghorn blaring and the lighthouse blinking about. It is well kept and the area around as well. Kudos to the keepers of this beautiful old building!

The area around the lighthouse is well kept and the penguin rehabilitation center is just next to it. It would have been nice to go inside and have a look from the top.

We did a short 10 minute drive from Saint Francis Bay to the lighthouse and surrounding coastal rocks. What a stunning location to watch sunset- the waves were absolutely wild- crashing high on the rocks with huge sprays of foam. The lighthouse frames the view back inland- and is a wonderful place to walk around. We took some beautiful photos here- and loved the spot.
