“Sandy family-friendly inner-city bay beach”
Review of Elwood Beach

Elwood Beach sits on Port Phillip Bay, close to the main city of Melbourne (which has only the Yarra River actually in it -- fine for boating sight-seeing, but not for swimming!), beside the traditional bayside suburb of Elwood.
Elwood Beach is typical of many other named bayside beaches around the eastern shore of Port Phillip Bay. The water is clear, and without surf, although on a windy day it can be choppy at the water's edge. The beach itself is fine sand -- perfect for lying comfortably on a towel, or building sand castles.
Like many of Melbourne's bayside beaches, it is perfect for a family with children who enjoy simple seaside play: jumping in the waves, digging holes, piling sand castles, making sand sculptures, playing with toy yachts.
Great for picnics, also.
During the summer, Elwood Beach has its own Life-Saving Club, with Life-Savers on duty to protect beach-goers.
There is a kiosk at one end of the beach, serving coffee and snack foods.
Elwood Beach sits on a well-established bayside bike trail and walking path.
Tall Norfolk pines decorate the foreshore.
A short stroll from the beach brings you to the Western end of Glen Huntly Road, and the nearby Y-intersection with Ormond Road contains many cafes and bars and snack food outlets.
Unlike St Kilda Beach, there is no Yacht Club, or Power Boat Marina, and very little of the bustle of kite-surfers and paddle-boarders and the hubbub of St Kilda Beach.
Unlike some other bayside beaches, there is no sad pocket of sand that collects flotsam and rubbish.
In short, if a city wanted to invent an ideal family beach, it would look a lot like Elwood Beach, with the grassy knoll of Point Ormond at its northern end, and spectacular views of the northern bayside and the Melbourne skyline, and glimpses of the soaring span of Westgate Bridge in the further distance, and even possibly glimpses on the horizon of the You Yang hills on the western side of the bay!

A lovely municipal beach with facilities. Not crowded. Also on a bike trail. If you want a busier beach then St Kilda has more people and more things to do and wild penguins after dusk but is more touristy.

Until November Elwood Beach is open to dogs and kids. On a lovely evening we went for a stroll and a sit and watched dogs and kids enjoying themselves on the sand. Top marks to Port Phillip Council for keeping it groomed in the off season!
