Elwood Beach is a clean sandy beach heading South from the Point Ormond hill. There are cycling and walking tracks through it and toilets and food facilities, too. There is no shelter to speak of and when a cool change arrives, you had better rush for cover. It is a great place to look across the bay at sunset. It can be hard to get to by public transport, but some bus routes come close.
We spent about an hour walking along the track, over the canal bridges, up to the lookout. It was a very nice calm and sunny Autumn day and was a delightful experience. Not sure what it would be like on a colder, wetter or windier day but today it was just perfect. We sat on a bench and could look out to sea, watch people pass by and watch all the skydivers landing in the nearby park.
Was a hot day in Melbourne so off to the beach for the afternoon. Went initially to St Kilda beach then Brighton beach - both beaches packed with no parking.
Ended up at Elwood - found plenty of parking close to the beach.
The beach was busy but not packed - real clean.
The water was warm and surprisingly clear, this a shallow beach but safe for all, especially kids.
A great relaxing afternoon at a Melbourne beach.
Great time, 5 or 6 free public BBQ' , large tables with sea view. We went there for a birthday. Great time with a lovely sunset. Friendly people and nice beach. I highly recommend that spot.
