We are visiting relatives in Las Palmas and went for a hike about 25 minutes away with a tour guide from Walk in Gran Canaria. At the end of our trail he said his favorite winery was nearby. He called ahead and arranged a tour with Ana, the Winemaster. The mountain roads to the winery are not for the faint of heart, but the trip is worth it. My wife and I have sampled wines from all over the world and believe that the Agala wines from here are among the very best we have ever tried. The volcanic soil is perfect for the grapes and they are fed by pure mountain water. In the Middle Ages, Spaniards imported many grape varietals that were later wiped out in Europe by a fungus. Today, the Canary Islands are one of the only places in the world where they survive. We snagged the last bottle of their white, Agala Altitud 1318, made of Albilio Criollo. It was superb. Our favorite was a deep red fruity Baboso Negro that reminded us of the best French Cabernet Sauvignons but was quite distinctive. This Agala Altitud 1175 was only 10€ direct from the winery! An outstanding wine that satisfied even my brother in law, who has been known to import $80 US bottles of wine without batting an eye. All but one of our 8 hikers came home with at least one bottle after a tasting session (10€ fee). Call ahead to ensure that a visit is possible - they request 72 hour notice to arrange food pairings with the wine. Highly recommended.
