I've flown Xiamen air several times but this will be the last time I do. As far as the flight attendants go they are very good. Albeit this was an older plane the condition of the seats were terrible. I heard something crunching when I sat down, It felt like there was a spring digging into my left thigh. I reached out to the flight attendant asking if there was another seat I could sit in. She agreed there was something wrong with the seat but the flight was full. She tried to put some tissue in between the cushion and the seat material and brought me an extra blanket to layover the seat..This did help but this foam should have been replaced years ago. The usb chargers on all 3 seats where I was sitting did not work. When I went to use the 120 volt outlet below the seat to charge my phone it was so worn out it would not hold the charger. OK so this was all the bad on the flight from Xiamen to LAX.... Except that in between Guangzhou and LAX the baggage handlers somehow broke off one of the handles on my luggage.. It's been two weeks of run around with this airline and still not gotten an answer as to how they will rectify this. Unacceptable customer DIS service. Ridiculous the hoops I have had to jump through to no avail

We have two young children with ADHD, tried to contact the airline 3days before flight but unable to arrange the seat together. The airline company asked me to pay extra money for seating. I booked four tickets for one family expecting parents can sit with young children but the staff didn't care at all. All I want is parents can sit with ADHD Children but they can't do that. This airline company is not family friendly unless you are willing to pay extra money. My mum and Dad don't speak English and I called the company to ask someone can take them to custom but was told they don't have this service even I am willing to pay for it. Mum and Dave flied with Malaysia Airlines and Southern Airline and never had a problem with this service but Xiamen Airline seems have many limitation with their services. Unfortunately there is not many options for us to fly back to Xiamen that is probably they have so many businesses and don't care about any customer service.

Absolutely unprofessional. Kept cancelling our flights, offering us a new one and by the time we reply (within a day), they say we can no longer take that flights because it’s sold out - even though you could’ve still purchased tickets from their website. This is my worst experience with an airline company and I would never travel with them again, wasted two whole days of my vacation not only because they gave us flights for a day later but also because our journey took 17 hours instead of 10. We had to sleep at the airport without any compensation whatsoever.

Worst long haul experience I've ever had. In the days running up to departure the flight was first posted as leaving late, then on time, then a bit late and it finally rolled into Doha at nearly 1am when it should have been 10.45pm. Half the plane missed their connections and were still sat around at 3.30am waiting for Qatar staff to sort them out. I had to stay overnight in Qatar and catch a plane to Manchester the next day. No explanation or apology given at any time by Xiamen. Cramped and uncomfortable seats and the flight tracking didn't work on the small screen. Have flown other Chinese Airlines that are much better. Qatar Airways, you need a better partner for your China trips. I won't be doing it again.

I had read the reviews and decided to book with Xiamen airlines regardless. The flight was $320 AUD with the next cheapest airline charging over $900 for the same flight.

I was pleasantly surprised. The staff were very friendly and genuinely helpful. Whilst not fluent in English they were able to communicate enough to get the job done.

The plane may have been old , but it was still clean and most importantly functional. The pitch being at the higher end for economy flights, particularly on budget carriers.

The food service commenced very early and there was adequate food. Whilst not a gourmet experience, the food was adequate. They did serve crackers in lieu of peanuts, which were really tasty. On the second flight they served mixed nuts and dried fruit, which was also a nice touch. I'm unsure if you can help yourself to snacks and drinks, like you can on Qantas as the food served was sufficient.

I had an 8 hour layover in Xiamen, whilst not ideal, there is filtered water stations, charging ports and reasonably comfortable chairs. The staff in the shops there speak very limited English so Google translate was a great help. If you want to buy anything in China, you should consider downloading the wechat pay app, as it is accepted pretty much everywhere in China.

For a third of the cost, I'd fly Xiamen every single time.
