“Flight fine. Check in nightmarish.”
Review of Virgin Atlantic Airways

Reviewed 19 February 2018

Arrived at airport at 5.30 pm for 8.35 flight. There were 456 passengers on the flight and initially 2 check in desks for Economy passengers. After we had queued for 45 minutes they closed down one of the desks - this with a massive queue stretching way back- sheer genius. We got checked in after standing for an hour and a quarter but there were many behind us who waited much longer.
This was followed by huge queues for the remaining formalities ( to be fair this is common to most airports ). The consequence was that we had no time to relax before boarding despite allowing 3 hours from arrival. The flight itself was ok but the food was way below the high standard that we had experienced on the outward journey 3 weeks previously. Virgin need to urgently get check in procedures soted out - there was a lot of dissatisfaction being expressed by a lot of customers

Code share with Air NZ and so I flew with Virgin Atlantic. Pleasantly impressed. Though do remember to download Virgin Australia Entertainment app for your mobile devise or tablet or iPad. Easily connects to aircraft wifi that then lets you watch movies, TV shows or listen to music. None of the latest, recent release movies but a few month old ones but short flight that is painless.

Modern plane versus a tired older plane, massive film and music choice in modern system versus an ageing system with limited choice. More meal choice and more items in the dinner including cheese and a liqueur versus... well let’s just say distinctly average. Between meal choice of snacks on help yourself arrangement versus none, and smiling happy people with personalities looking after you versus all too clearly struggling staff often embarrassed about the meals or non working entertainment systems. Oh and terminal 3 also provides better and quicker security clearance than terminal five though it has less food choices.

Sorry BA but you can’t carry on cutting costs year after year without it showing and boy it really does now. Conversely well done Virgin for managing to maintain your view of what service really should mean.

We travelled on a Virgin Atlantic 747 from Gatwick to Havana return, for the outbound we had extra legroom seats, which given the length of the flight and the cost were excellent value. The cleanliness and standard of the plane were both very good and much better than the BA Long haul economy flights from Gatwick which we have taken in the past.

The food and drink were very good, along with friendly staff and lots of room. The entertainment system was good as well.

For our return flight we were in standard economy in the “bubble” upstairs which was good compared to the standard economy downstairs. The advantage of being upstairs was a much smaller cabin with less going on around us meaning a better chance of a bit of sleep. As with the outbound the staff were very good.

We would definitely travel with Virgin again given the choice.

Great flight out, but on the return trip, they gave us a menu but as we were sat at the back of premium economy, They had run out of my choice, ended up not eating. Not happy with service having paid extra to up grade.
