“Decidedly average”
Review of United Airlines

Reviewed 22 January 2018

Chicago to Maui is a 9.5 hr flight, one of the longer domestic flights. In fact, it is as long or longer than many transatlantic flights. But being a domestic route, I was worried about the level of service we would be provided on such a long flight.

The service of the stewards was very good. While the flight was full and they were busy, they had a friendly attitude and took good care of us.

The entertainment streaming services were not so good. Periodically, the show or movie being streamed would stop or the app would take us back to the menu. This would require us to restart the program and scroll to the last spot we were watching. But eventually, we were able to watch what we wanted.

The rest of the services were average: OK leg room (I'm 180cm), OK elbow room, OK meals (for airline food). It is exactly what we've come to expect in economy, nothing special but nothing terrible.

This was a trip with my 81 year old mother. We were helped at checkin by a friendly gentleman that did not force Mom to use the new ways of air travel. He tagged her bags, got her boarding passes for her, and her requested wheelchair was there right away. At the gate there were plenty of announcements and were able to board early and get her situated. We were in Economy Plus with a little more legroom for the long flight, which I very much recommend despite the extra charge. In San Francisco her wheelchair assistance was there right away and helped with all her stuff as well. They were very friendly and helpful, even asked if she needed to stop at the restroom. The connection flight to Pasco went equally as smooth and other than not having a jetbridge in Pasco, I was very impressed with the overall service and feel comfortable that she would be taken care of traveling alone.

Some issues with bordering, but that seems like a common issue. The computer wouldn't accept the scanned tickets. It eventually got fixed. The check in staff in the airport was very helpful in changing our seats. Originally, we were seated in different rows and she was able to put us together. The flight attends were friendly but seemed to neglect their duties a bit in flight. We sat in first class but my garbage was left to sit next to me almost the entire flight. We had two flight attendants for about 12 people. They spent a lot of time sitting on their cell phones and visiting with each other versus checking on the cabin and the passengers needs. If someone needed something you had to use the call button. It was disappointing. However, despite the 1 1/2 hour delay on the departure, we made it back to NJ about 30 minutes late. Not bad.

The time aboard the airplanes to and from home was fine my problem had to do with all other aspects of the way United takes care of its passengers who are traveling economy plus for hundreds of dollars more than economy.
