“Toronto to Lihue....Honalulu to Toronto AT LASt”
Review of United Airlines

Have been a member of Continental whateverflyersclub since 87, since United took over its been a nose dive. I would say, pricewise, we were satisfied, leg room was a notch above 3 class charter. NO service. Why have airpeople, they huddle in their booth, and do nothing for passangers. Hawaiian AIrlines in 35 served us more than in 8 hours to Chicago. I will avoid, unless the price is right.

I traveled last week from Newark to Paris and return. United announced a few years ago the Polaris service. Firstly, there is only one United lounge in the US, Chicago, that offers the Polaris service. The current United Airlines club in Newark was very challenging as it was way too crowded and did not even have two seats. We ended up having to go back outside to find seats together.
United also pre-marketed Polaris. To date, there seems only to be only a few aircraft with the new seats. The United Business Class, especially on the 767 aircraft, is very basic. The seats are fair as they are quite tight and they don’t all have aisle access which is becoming more common on other carriers.
The service was average and the meal was poorly prepared, my steak was too tough to eat. In business, it would also be nice to offer a better wine selection. The challenge for the passenger is that since most of the United are full, they do not seem to be any rush to upgrade their product.

Leaving Mobile is small airport, easy to park, easy to manage. The small planes departing to various cities, including Houston, which was the hub i was changing planes, is located downstairs. It is a small plane, and if you have a carryon, it almost certainly must be gate checked, so be prepared to hang onto your laptop, or other essentials.

The terminal in Houston is super nice. a lot of places to eat. and the first class flight to LAX was nice, clean and good service.

I forgot how much worse the flight experience is with United than AA, especially in long flights, and today I got reminded one more time.

Comparing two similar international flights (~5 hrs) on a 737 with United and 757 with AA that I have done 2 days apart from each flight:

- The coach seats are harder in United, and after a couple of hours you start to really notice the difference (to the point that I now try to bring always a cushion with me for my United flights)
- United does have any blankets in coach, why bother
- If the flight has individual TVs (which are more frequent in United than AA), If you want to watch a movie or select a TV channel you have to pay for it in United, not AA. Also, to make sure that you have a miserable experience and you finally buy the movies, United repeats the same exact couple of programs over and over (it is like Groundhog Day, I now know by heart all the questions on the Cash Cab episode!!!)
- In United you just get free one tiny Biscoff and soft drinks, everything else you have to pay for it. Btw, if you are hungry do not hesitate because they only carry 8 sandwiches for the entire 5 hr flight and today when they got to row 21 on their first pass they were already gone
- Btw, on the ~ 5 hr flight from COPA right before the one from United (and they are both STAR Alliance partners) they provide food, drinks and entertainment for free!
- If you are a Platinum customer with United, once you get on the plane you are just one more. In domestic flights AA offers one complementary drink and United nothing. Apparently once you get to 1K with United there is a difference. I just don’t think is it worth the pain to have to fly the additional miles to get to it

Because of my work I flew and fly a lot with all carriers. Continental Airlines had a great customer experience and United was pretty far from them. Unfortunately, after the merger they kept the United name and their experience.
