I recently flew to Gdansk from Bristol for a business trip and had an absolutely appalling experience with KLM.
Four days before my outbound flight, I attempted to check in, only to discover that my passport needed at least three months of validity beyond my return date (mine expired on April 25th but needed to be valid until at least April 30th). Unable to get an emergency passport appointment until the morning of my flight, I contacted KLM to ask if I could reschedule. They flat-out refused.
Knowing I wouldn’t make the original flight, I asked a KLM representative if I could book a separate outbound flight and still use my return ticket. I was assured that this was possible. Based on this information, I went ahead and booked a new outbound flight.
Two days before my return, I attempted to check in via the KLM app, but my booking was greyed out. I called KLM again, explained the situation, and was once again reassured that my return ticket was still valid. I was told to check in 30 hours before departure. However, on the morning of my flight, I saw a notice on my booking stating, "As requested, your flight has been removed from your booking."
Frustrated, I spoke to yet another KLM representative, who now told me I needed to send confirmation of my booking for it to be reinstated. I did this immediately.
Upon arriving at the airport, I went to check in—only to be told that I needed to go to the ticket office, which was operated by the airport, not KLM. The staff at the ticket office then contacted KLM directly on my behalf to clarify the situation, and it was they who informed me that I would have to pay a €150 "out of sequence fee” just to board the flight I had already paid for.
Completely shocked, I called KLM myself to get clarification. They reaffirmed that I was not allowed to board the flight unless I paid this arbitrary fee. I explained that I had been misled by multiple KLM representatives and that I did not have the money to pay it. Their response? If you don’t pay, you don’t fly.
With no other choice, I had to call my parents and borrow money just to board the flight home.
To make matters worse, I was then informed that had I booked my second outbound flight after the original departure time, I wouldn’t have been charged this outrageous fee at all—something none of the previous three KLM agents had bothered to mention.
This was an absolutely disgraceful experience. KLM’s staff gave me incorrect information at every step, leaving me stranded and forced to pay an unfair fee at the last minute. Their customer service is incompetent, their policies are deliberately misleading, and their attitude toward customers is appalling.
Safe to say, I will never fly with KLM again. Avoid this airline at all costs.
