“Consistent Experience”
Review of Japan Airlines (JAL)

Reviewed 31 May 2018

I have flown this route many times. Japan Airlines provides a consistent experience in both their hard product (seats, meals) and very helpful attitude of their employees. The seats in business class for this short flight (about 4 hours) are not lie flat and the window seats do not have direct aisle access. Typically these aren’t problems for a short flight. The boarding process was a stress free experience. On this particular flight there were high winds at Narita forcing multiple landing attempts. The pilot informed us of this possibility shortly after takeoff. It was useful to know this in advance.

While we had some language problems with the flight attendants, they went out of the way to help. While most airlines have a 24 hour window for special meals JAL is 72, however, AA sent a note to JAL and JAL came through. The flight crew was attentive, friendly, and actually seemed to care. I was impressed. That being said, there could be better coordination with AA for executive platinum members. Sometimes the oneworld benfits get lost. It also sucks to get stuck litterally at the back of the plane as an elite flyer.

My wife and I flew to Japan on JAL a couple of weeks back in economy class. We flew on the 787 which was new and comfortable. Service by the JAL stewardesses was quite superb, so polite, efficient and friendly. Hard to believe we were in economy, this was as good as business class. Food was excellent too, possibly the best flight I have ever been on and I have flown extensively over the last 50 years.

After living in Japan for five and a half year, the one thing I miss the most about Japan, aside from the food, is its super advanced toilet. And, I did not expect that Japan Airlines would actually bring that toilet experience onto its flight. Literally. The amenities, those buttons (gosh, THOSE buttons), and the cleanliness screamt Japan and it almost moved me to tears.

As for the rest, it had just the right legroom space, entertainment was plenty enough for an 8-hour flight, and the service was overall nice. Not a big fan of the in-flight meal, but it was paid off with a great glass of umeshu. :)

Getting onto a flight from Japan to New York and realised that Japan Airlines had put a mobility impaired man in the aisle seat with my partner and I on the window and middle. Of course everyone has a right to travel but my question is whether they support dangerous seating conditions with tow. Able bodied people to now have to navigate over someone who can’t move out of their seat. If there was an emergency or fire where evacuation was required we would be stuffed literally!! He wouldn’t be able to get out in time and we would have to physically get over him or assist him to get out. This is a highly dangerous situation which Japan Airlines condones. Unfortunately Qantas did a very similar thing before and after complaining realised it was a fault in their system that shouldn’t allow it.

Very disappointed with Japan Airlines. You may wish to rethink your journey with them.
