“First Time with ANA”
Review of ANA (All Nippon Airways)

Reviewed 25 February 2018

It was a late flight arriving in Tokyo early morning.
The aircraft was a new A350 which was a pleasant aircraft to travel in, more leg room, slightly wider seats and the windows are adjustable to allow light in at your requirement (even in the toilets).
The staff were very pleasant, food reasonable and service reasonably good. What made the flight more pleasant was the efficiency of the Haneda airport. From landing at 7 am to waiting for the bus to head to the hotel was only 25 mins.
All in an pleasant experience.

ANA is my new favorite airline. What a contrast with my home Airline, United Airlines! ANA has not forgotten that the customer is the reason it exists-sadly, US airlines gave up on that concept a long time ago! VP of Sales greeted us personally as we checked in at IAH and later at the gate. Thanked us for our business...wow, all the years I have flown US airlines, never seen a big-wig do that.
ANA planes are spotless and new; FAs are sprightly, smile a lot, show genuine warmth and care-again a contrast with UA, surly FAs, who couldn’t care less!
ANA gate agents bow to waiting customers as Boarding is announced! What an act of humility and gratitude! Truly a 5-Star airline. UA is too arrogant to learn from ANA...sadly!

For our third trip to Japan we used the ANA tourist airpass instead of the JR rail pass (although we did buy the JR Kansai wide pass for our Osaka, Kobe, Himenji, Takamatsu sector). This can be booked online from the UK and it is sold in UK sterling for the equvalent of JPY10,000 per sector. We required Tokyo Haneda - Sapporo New Chitoise, New Chitoise to Osaka Kobe, Osaka kansai to Ishigaki and Ishigaki to Tokyo Haneda. We couldn't make the booking work, so I phoned ANA and the agent explained it was becuase the frst sector was not available on that fare type. When we dropped it from the booking the itinerary worked (see my JAL review for our workaround - we used avios on the first sector). The cost for our 3 sectors was JPY 30,000 (£222 equiv at around JPY150 to £1). The fare is non-refundable, and as we discovered you shouldn't leave this too late (we booked early July for mid September) or eligible tickets may be sold out. I had read that check in on a tourist air pass can be difficult. You must check-in at the airport and some agents are unfamiliar with the passes. We arrived early in case, and it was just as well - there was no problem with the reservation but the queues - first to check-in and then again at the separate bag drop were horrendous. I don't kow if this was common - but the agents were having to retrieve passengers from the long line-up whose flights were closing. Anyway once checked in our ANA / Air DO code share flight ran smoothly, athough there was another hiccup when the gate changed and we found ourselves sitting at an empty gate wondering why. So when travelling by air in Japan keep an eye on the screens! The flight itself was punctual, efficient and uneventful - which is exactly what you want from air travel. The tourist air pass is very highly recommended to travel some big distances when you've exhausted the obvious options on the rail pass and what to do the Okinawa islands - we did Hokaido all the way to Ishigaki via Osaka and back to Tokyo. It costs around the same as the JR rail pass - but unlike the rail pass you must plan early.

Very good service and food. The Japanese meal was quite delicious with a variety of appetizers and fish for the main course. Very good wine choices of champagne, white and red. Typical of Asian airlines, a variety of snacks was available in between meals from cold to hot. Comfortable seat with separate control of recline and seat forward position, Quite spacious with plenty of table and storage space.

Recently flew Sydney to Tokyo (Haneda airport) and return with ANA. It was an overnight flight both ways. In Sydney, ANA boarded at Gate 51, which has plenty of seating and room compared to some other gates. The plane was almost full on both legs, but the 787 is a fairly comfortable and roomy aircraft, even in economy. The food was tasty and fresh, and the service was first rate. The on-time landing was the smoothest I have experienced in many years. The check-in at Haneda for the return journey was quick and efficient (maybe helped by checking in several hours before the rush), and the staff were most polite and helpful. The flight was again on time, the service again excellent, and it was a pretty relaxing experience, considering how difficult it can sometimes be to sleep in a full aeroplane. In short, I hope to travel to Japan again, and will look to ANA as the first choice for a direct flight.
