Review of American Airlines

Reviewed 2 April 2018

We were booked with American Airlines for Chicago to Philadelphia last week when the north/eastern snow storm shut down airports with all flights cancelled.
We called American Airlines and our Consultant Tiffany could not be more helpful in scheduling flight change, although with the 2 day snow storm issue we missed Philadelphia and flew straight to Washington DC.
The flight from Chicago to Washington DC was via Rochester NY but the complimentary upgrade to Business was great.
The Flight from rescheduling, check-in, flight was great, the Flight Crew were friendly and the aircraft was modern.
We also flew another 3 American Airline flights from Boston to Chicago, Washington DC to New York and New York to San Francisco, all being high standard.
If you are a Qantas FF submit your QFF number, it makes a huge difference with seat allocation, boarding, etc.

We flew American to get us to Buenos Aires to board a cruise. There was a direct flight from the UK for the outbound leg, but as we were returning from Santiago (Chile), we would have to make the return trip in two legs. As there was a significant cost benefit in flying American, that was the choice.
We use Virgin Atlantic as the standard against which we measure all airlines. We had two checked bags each on this flight - we think because the leg from Miami to Buenos Aires via Latam allowed to checked bags each. Food was good, entertainment was excellent, cabin service very good. It appears that beers and wine are free but 'cocktails' are chargeable. That was fine for me - a glass to two of red with my meal does the trick. Would happily fly them again. Very, very pleasantly surprised. The only 'niggle' was that very few seats were available for selection when I checked-in online. It looked like most of the seats had a surcharge applied. We flew with friends and they sere separated as a result - yet there were quite a few empty seats on this flight. Cannot understand that.

We actually flew in the new AA Premium Economy Class in the middle of the plane behind Business Class and the Economy Class sections. We applied for an upgrade to Business Class but upgrades were not available. We flew on AA 73 from LAX-SYD and AA 72 from SYD-LAX on the return. Had previously been on a Dreamliner on KAL from ICN to Chengdu, but this was really a long haul being 16 hours and 13+ hours durations. The Dreamliner was absolutely one of the best planes to be in. The Premium Economy is spacious enough with comfortable seats that are wider than the 3-3-3 seats in economy. The pitch between seat rows is larger and you can comfortably recline and the footrests were also nice. There are plenty of power plugs available (110v and USB) at each seat. The windows are very large, especially when compared to the tiny portholes on the A380... no comparison. The ability of the windows to block out the outside light is just brilliant and works very effectively. You get nice amenity bag going both ways, but we got slippers on the way back from Sydney. The meals on AA 72 were much better than the meals on AA 73. Perhaps the airline kitchens are better in Australia than in the US. The Dreamliner was smooth and very comfortable. One of the best rides in the air we ever had. Would pick a 787 over an A380 any day. If you can't fly business class, premium economy is a good alternative.

I used American Airlines for the first time in March for my daughter’s spring break vacation. We traveled as a family from LAX airport to Auckland, New Zealand. We boarded just fine but was a bit puzzled when the captain announced that they had to wait for paperwork to be signed before we could depart. I fly internationally every 2 years and this was the first time I’ve had to wait in a plane for more than half an hour to get paperwork done. I wasn’t really bothered too much, the cabin temperature was comfortable and I ended up taking a nap. Once we were in the air the flight was smooth and they had a wide selection of shows and movies. Food was average, they served two meals and a snack. Service was just fine. Bottom line, I would take American Airlines again.
