Review of Air Canada

Nothing special about the company. What surprised is that food is not provided on the 4-hours flight (only for additional price).

Quick fix on a boarding pass mix up. Friendly service staff all around. Customer service at all airports during flight was exceptional.

Due to very bad weather (snow ) in Ottawa we were delayed 3 hours. Upon arrival in London staff was on standby to help transfer customers to rebooked flights and that was not even a club member. My final delay was only 1 hour and 30 minutes

Aircraft: Boeing 787 (Dreamliner).Check-in: A bit hectic. No more stewardesses spread out throughout the aircraft to help travelers storing their luggage.Several older travelers had difficulties finding their seats and lifting their carry-ons into the overhead bins.Seating comfort: Just O.K.,not much legroom.None, when the seat in front was tilted back. The armrest on the aisle side could be tipped up;this made getting in and out of the seats so much easier.Entertainment: Much improved from previous Air Canada flights.Nor more breakdowns. The touchscreens worked smoothly.Selection:O.K. Strange for a flight from Europe: A large selection of "Kung Fu" movies.Washrooms: too few.Not cleaned often enough.Very unkempt, and at times dirty, after only a few hours of flight. Why can't airlines come up with a more pleasant color scheme for their washrooms. Why this institutional grey? They look already unwelcome, when they are just have cleaned.Engine noise has much improved over older aircrafts. The Dreamliner has dimmable windows (no shades anymore). They do not darken 100%.If the sun shines straight (perpendicular) into a window,it is impossible to read.I had to hang a paper tissue from my glasses,in order to block out the sun.Overhead lights: Ours did not line up correctly with the seats.Maybe Air Canada at the last minute added more rows of seats, thus messing up the layout of the lights. When the backrest of seat in front was tilted back all the way,it would block-out part of the light. The lights themselves were too bright. But on to my main beef with Air Canada.....the awful, pathetically cheap food! Let me put it his way.... I would not serve Air Canada's airline food to my worst enemies! It cannot even be called junk-food! That would be an insult to any decent Burger with Fries! The Aluminum trays for the hot food seem to be getting smaller every year. The hot lunch consisted of a few small pieces of chicken and beans, mashed potatoes and tomato sauce.Salad: A few carrot slivers (the plastic cup was only 1/2 full). Rubber bun (still half-frozen),My wife was unable to cut it. Rock-hard butter. No cheese. After several hours of flying: Pretzels + coffee. Then shortly before landing: Afternoon Tea a' la Air Canada: A Pizza Stick (with chicken),the size of a big cigar. Why does Air Canada insists on serving their version of a low-quality Starvation-Diet? Why not add a few dollars to the ticket price, serve decent food and make travelers happy? The long-suffering flying public (economy) would be more than grateful.Want to see how it's done? Head west & take a Singapore Airline flight.Or join a South-East Asian airline flight (for example: Vietnam Airlines). They manage to serve a very nice sandwich lunch on one-hour flights! I think with Air Canada it is all about attitude and bottom line. They simply do not care. They know, that you are stuck with them.Air Canada enjoys near monopoly on many domestic and international flights. They also enjoy the backing of the Canadian Government. If an airline becomes to "threatening" with a new route to Canada (for example: Singapore Airlines Singapore to Vancouver),the applications for landing rights will be blocked. Who voted Air Canada "The Best Airline
in North America"? Air Canada's management? See separate review for our trip to Europe (Toronto - Zürich).A final word: We would gladly give Air Canada a much better rating,if they would offer better food. Why cannot we pre-order and pre-pay a good-sized,enjoyable meal to our liking?

Flight from Ottawa to Cabo San Lucas after connecting in Toronto. Boarded the plane on time in Ottawa. Flight attendant told us the pilots were not onboard yet as they needed to abide by their rest time between flights. Flight Attendant said they couldn't turn the heat on as the pilots dont tell them which is "the heater button" (it was -35 in Ottawa). Pilots boarded after about 15 minutes. Then they couldn't get the door of the plane shut as they told us the door latch was frozen. After much fiddling around to no avail, we were ordered to deplane as it was too cold. They indicated they were aware that passengers had connections at Pearson and to speak with the AC rep. When we deplaned, no passengers were permitted to approach the AC rep at the gate. She just kept repeating do not approach her loudly. Finally boarded again after mechanical issue was fixed. Landed in Toronto too late to catch the connection to Cabo as it already left. What followed was a fiasco of standing in lines. AC leaves you on hold via the phone from 1.5 to 3 hrs. Waited in line at AC ticketing for 2 hrs. Rebooked us on a flight to Chicago then to Cabo from Chicago the following day. We took it even though we were losing a day of our vacation at the resort. Waited 2 hrs for AC to find our bag. Went to board flight to Chicago and informed it was cancelled due to mechanical issues. Waited in line again for 2 hrs with no resolution at end of wait. Simultaneously on hold on phone with AC Vacations They did not have any resolution. Informed us to contact a travel agent if we wanted another trip option. Requested a flight back to Ottawa which they agreed to. Another hour in line to argue for a hotel voucher for the night. AC reps said we did not qualify for vouchers as the new flight was cancelled due to weather which we stated was not what 2 previous AC reps had told us. Upon return home, we called and waited on hold for hours with AC Vacations. They would give us a time they would call back but never followed through. Since we had booked thru an online travel site, AC told us it was up to the travel site to resolve. After 5 full days of calling and waiting on hold for the entire day, ACV told us they had offered a resolve to the travel site but could not disclose it to us, we would need to contact the travel site. When we did, we were informed we would receive the 4K + we had paid for Iyar cancelled trip in AC vouchers to be booked in the next 6 months. Thankfully we HAD used an online travel site as I fear that if we had booked directly with ACV we would not have received any resolve. Still haven't received the vouchers. Wasted our vacation time from work to deal with not very nice or helpful AC Vacations reps for 5 days
