I flew on Maldivian from Male to Hanimaadhoo and back. Each leg of the trip was made up of two 20 minute flights.
Our flight had been delayed for more than 30 minutes when the pilots exited the plane that we were supposed to board. They went across the tarmac to a plane that had been brought in presumably to replace ours. Our gate was switched and everyone shuffled across the room to the other boarding area. After another 15 minutes the pilots must have decided that compared to the second plane the first plane (which they initially weren't going to fly) wasn't all that bad and they went back across the tarmac. A short while late an announcement was made that our gate had been changed back to the original one. After another 15 or so minutes we were allowed to board where we could watch as technicians poked around in the wheel well of our turboprop. At this point I was very much ready for my holiday to be over because it was apparent we would be taking off, broken aircraft or not.
Once in the air the service was actually reasonably good. Assorted tropical fruit juices were brought around more than once during the course of the two flights. We ended up being a over an hour late. But after being worried that we wouldn't arrive at all an hour didn't seem like too much.
As another reviewer pointed out there aren't a lot options for when it comes to getting to the atolls that are a fair distance from Male. Seaplanes don't go everywhere and taking a boat isn't always practical. I wouldn't let this stop you from looking into destinations in the Maldives that only Maldivian services but I would definitely consider alternatives to Maldivian if given the opportunity.
