To get to the South Coast (where Diani is) from Mombasa Town, which is on an island in an inlet of the ocean, you have to take a ferry across the channel between them. Your taxi or minibus drives onto the ferry, and you stay in your vehicle for the short crossing.(around 500m).

So to get to Diani from the airport you cross a causeway onto Mombasa island drive through Mombasa Town then take the ferry to the south coast.

The ferry crossing is a real education & not to be missed. Organised chaos perfectly describes the seething mix of cars, lorries, buses, tuk-tuks & 100s of milling pedestrians. It will keep you entertained while you wait your turn to board. Patience is a virtue. Fortunately the owners of the hotel where we stay have a priority pass so don't have to queue.

Good luck & enjoy your trip.

Besides going on safari you can snorkel, go deep sea fishing, visit the Colobus sanctuary in Diani. Have a day trip to Mombasa and visit Fort Jesus, visit the local town whilst on safari. Have a bush tour I'm Ukunda (local town before reaching Diani Beach). If you tell your safari company what your interests are they will advise you on what to do and where to go. If you sponsor an Elephant (£30pp) with the Elephant orphanage In Voi (nearest town to Tsavo East) you can visit the orphanage whilst on safari. Info@ekeasafaris.com and they will sort things out for you. They organised our safari and were very helpful.
