The fastest way is by bus direct from Rome to Grottammare. Buses leave from the Castropretorio station or Tiburtina station, and the trip takes about 3 1/2 hours. You can find schedules here:

http://www.romamarchelinee.it

Put Roma in the box that says "da" and Grottammare in the box that says "a" and choose your date.

You can also go by train, but it takes longer, and you have to change trains in either Ancona or Pescara. However, there are more daily departures, so it may suit you better.

Luca is going to say San Benedetto, for sure! He's always trying to deviate people there.

What sort of place are you looking for? There are lots of different types of beach towns here.

There are dozens of nice beach towns along the Adriatic, and they have different characteristics, so it would have helped if you could have narrowed down a bit what you want. Night life? Family beach? I assume you mean Pratola Peligna, which is in Abruzzo. You might want to ask in the Abruzzo forum about beach towns there, or even in the Puglia forum, because you won't be too far from the Gargano region, which is very popular with tourists. I don't know these areas very well.

In Le Marche, there are also lots of beach towns, and I know that area best. San Benedetto del Tronto is fairly popular. Torre di Palme is a very pretty little village on a cliff overlooking the sea, near the city of Fermo. Friends of ours have a summer home in Porto San Giorgio, and I've heard that is a very nice town, with a good family beach. Just south of Ancona, there are some very pretty beach towns at the foot of Monte Conero, on a beautiful bay. The beaches here tend to be narrow and pebbly, but there are a few sandy beaches. Senigallia has a lovely wide sandy beach, ideal for families with small children, as the water is very shallow near the shore. Senigallia also has a very nice historic center, walking distance from the beach, and it has some of Italy's best seafood restaurants.
