We plan on taking a train from Budapest to Zilina on Sept. 26 and returning to Budapest on or about Oct 1.
I think we have that schedule readily available.
Must we book in advance?
BUT the biggest problem is we need to get a train from Zilina to Ruzomberok and back.
Is there anything available?
We leave Budapest on Oct 3.

There is a direct train connection from Žilina to Ružomberok. For schedule look at http://www.cp.sk (in the right corner is English version)
There are trains going every hour from Žilina to Ruzomberok /local and fast too/, no reservation needed. With local, you can stop at Strecno - 15 minutes walk to beautifull castle and /or/ nice raft trip at river Vah

With your suggestion, www.cp.sk, I was able to find a train route from Budapest to Ruzomberok without stopping in Zilina(which I thought was necessary). ~t
